From Television to Vertical Content, Sanket ‘Don’ Vanzara Reinvents His Entertainment Playbook

For more than two decades, Sanket M. Vanzara has watched the Indian entertainment industry repeatedly change its screen, its audience and even its language. He began when appointment television ruled Indian homes, stayed the course as satellite television exploded, adapted as OTT rewrote the rules, and is now betting on one of the fastest-growing forms of digital storytelling — vertical content.

Popularly known as “Don,” Vanzara is today building the next chapter of Don Vanzara Showbiz LLP around a simple belief: the screen may become smaller, but the storytelling cannot.

That conviction is already producing numbers. The company’s vertical series Gold Digger Kahin Ki has crossed 300 million views and earned multiple industry recognitions, becoming one of its biggest successes in the emerging format. For Vanzara, however, the milestone is less about celebrating a number and more about proving that disciplined storytelling can travel successfully from television sets to mobile phones.

His journey makes that transition particularly significant.

Vanzara did not enter entertainment with a film-school pedigree or an established family name. A Chemistry graduate from the University of Bombay, he spent his early professional years running independent businesses before the entertainment industry drew him in.

In 2000, he entered television at Neela Telefilms, initially joining production to learn the process. What began at the bottom of the production ladder quickly grew into greater responsibility. His analytical approach, business instincts and interest in the creative process saw him move into an executive producer’s role and become involved not only in production planning but also scripts and story development.

Those formative years brought him close to projects including Hum Sub Ek Hain and Yeh Duniya Hai Rangeen, while he also worked with the creative team on properties such as Saarthi and Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah during their developmental journeys.

There was no overnight breakthrough. What followed instead were years of sets, budgets, schedules, negotiations, delayed shoots, difficult locations, broadcaster demands and the everyday firefighting that rarely makes it into the glamour pages of show business.

And perhaps that is where Vanzara’s story really lies.

He gradually moved through leadership positions at production houses including Clapstem Productions and DJ’s A Creative Unit, eventually serving as Vice President – Scripted Business at Endemol India. His work expanded from executing programmes to building fiction businesses — developing concepts, pitching properties, structuring productions and making creative ambition work within commercial realities.

Over the years, he has worked on or overseen more than 60 television projects, besides web series and feature films. His producing credits include the 50-episode sci-fi mytho-comedy Maharaj Ki Jai Ho on StarPlus, Lootere – The Bandits of British India on Epic TV and Kunwara Hai Par Humara Hai on ZeeMagic.

His larger body of work stretches across some of Indian television’s familiar titles — from Choti Bahu, Parvarrish and Kaala Teeka to Mere Dad Ki Dulhan, Shaurya Aur Anokhi Ki Kahani and Sumit Sambhal Lega, the Indian adaptation of Everybody Loves Raymond.

Films became another part of that journey. He served as Executive Producer on Khichdi and was associated with the challenging line production of the Hindi-Assamese feature As the River Flows, financed by the National Film Development Corporation.

The NFDC association would later take another form when Vanzara became part of its evaluation process for film proposals, contributing his industry experience to the assessment of projects seeking to become part of India’s cinema landscape.

But Vanzara’s real strength has never been confined to a designation.

He understands the unglamorous machinery behind entertainment — production planning, budgets, operations, intellectual property, contracts, talent negotiations and the delicate balance between what a creator wants and what a production can realistically deliver.

He describes his approach as the meeting of the left and right brain: creativity on one side, analysis on the other.

That balance may explain why, after spending years producing for traditional television and long-format storytelling, he did not dismiss vertical content as a passing social-media trend.

    He saw an audience changing.

A generation was increasingly watching stories in the same orientation in which it held its phone. Episodes were getting shorter. Hooks needed to arrive faster. Attention had become harder to earn. Yet Vanzara believed the principles he had learnt through decades of television still mattered — character, conflict, emotion, pace and production discipline.

Rather than fighting the change, he chose to learn its grammar.

Today, Don Vanzara Showbiz LLP has developed a focused creative-production operation for the vertical space while simultaneously remaining involved with longer-format projects. The company has collaborated with production houses including Magic Moments Motion Pictures, Coconut Media Box, DJ’s A Creative Unit, Dome Entertainment and Neela Films Limited, and has worked in various capacities with platforms including Sony LIV and Netflix. In vertical content, it has collaborated with platforms such as JioStar, StoryTV and ZeeBullet, while also line producing for Juggernaut.

Gold Digger Kahin Ki crossing 300 million views is therefore not merely another credit on Vanzara’s résumé. It represents something larger: a veteran producer proving that experience does not have to become baggage when an industry changes.

    It can become an advantage.

There is something fitting about a producer who began his television career more than two decades ago now telling stories for an audience watching vertically on a phone.

    The technology changed.

    The platforms changed.

    The duration changed.

But Vanzara’s working philosophy did not.

For him, content still begins with an idea, survives through the right people and succeeds only when somebody remains committed enough to carry it all the way to the audience.

After more than 25 years in entertainment, Sanket “Don” Vanzara is not looking back at the television era he came from.

He is carrying everything it taught him into what comes next.
