On October 5, the bride and groom held their wedding. Saint Seiya-Theme wedding held at the Temple of the Atonement of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Leon, Mexico. While anime-themed weddings are not uncommon, the Archdiocese of Leon and Archbishop Jaime Calderon were not happy with the whole incident. Archbishop Jaime Calderon expressed his thoughts in a statement Facebook October 14th.
In the post, the archdiocese also said, “The liturgy is the mystery of Christ performed and presented in the sacraments of the Church.”
In his statement, the archbishop pointed out five points for theme weddings. They are:
1. The sacraments are very important in the life of the Church because they produce new life in Christ, in those who receive them and in those who celebrate them. Because the sacraments are transcendent realities and therefore possess dignity.
2. The temple is a sacred place for worship and encounter with God, so it is required to dress appropriately to enter the temple.
3. The sacraments are not fiction or imagination, they are realities that must challenge the entire existence of those who receive and celebrate them. This must be reflected in the right preparation to receive them.
4. The bride and groom, and all those attending the celebration of the Sacrament, are therefore asked to dress modestly.
5. Marriage is sacred because it comes from God and both spouses must give that moment status and dignity.
Archbishop Jaime Calderón Calderón further elaborated:
Because of what happened last Saturday (October 5) during the celebrations held in the Temple of the Atonement of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and recalling the importance of every Eucharistic celebration, I convey to all the People of God and to all people of good will: From now on, any other situation that may compromise or violate the integrity of the Faith and the dignity of the Sacraments will not be allowed, and if such a situation arises, I ask my brother priests to suspend the celebrations.
ANN contacted the Archdiocese of Tokyo to ask if it had a similar policy to the Archdiocese of Leon. However, as of press time, it has not responded to our inquiries.
