Netflix has released its trailer for Tyson, the streamer’s “unfiltered and deeply personal” Mike Tyson docu-series directed by Floyd Russ (American Manhunt: O.J. Simpson). As your typical ‘Flix blend of polished interviews with people on couches and archival footage, Tyson will document “one of the most feared and fascinating figures in sports history,” from “his chaotic upbringing in Brooklyn to global superstardom.” No question the trailer accomplishes a form of glossy hype mongering that Tyson’s former manager Don King might appreciate, intercutting fight clips with images of a younger Tyson in handcuffs (while weaving around the reason why he was in them to begin with, at least for now), and showing a softer side of the former undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, as he wipes tears from his eyes and pours champagne over the grave of his late trainer, Cus D’Amato.
The October 13 premiere of the four-part series precedes the boxer’s new one-man show, Return Of The Mike, which hits the streamer on November 3. Per Netflix, Returnwill be “a raw, unfiltered one-man show filmed at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, FL” that marks Tyson’s return to the stage since 2013’s The Undisputed Truth. “The former heavyweight champion trades menace for mischief, revealing himself as a natural comedian with sharp timing and a gift for turning his own chaos into punchlines.”
