Meta just announced a new generative artificial intelligence model that can help users turn simple text into images, videos, and audio clips.
Meta Movie Gen allows users to enter text and automatically generate new videos, personalize videos, perform video edits, and generate audio, all trained on a “combination of licensed and publicly available datasets.”
If this looks a lot like OpenAI’s Sora, that’s because it’s very similar. But Movie Gen builds on Meta’s previous artificial intelligence work—for example, you may remember or even used Llama Image. But Movie Gen is the third wave of its generative AI work, and Meta says it combines all the previous models. “Similar to previous generations of products,” Meta wrote in a blog post, “we anticipate these models will support a variety of new products that accelerate creativity.”
Meta noted that “generative AI does not replace the work of artists and animators,” but said the company “believes[s] Harness the power of this technology to help people express themselves in new ways and provide opportunities to those who wouldn’t otherwise have them.
Mix and match speed of light
“We hope that perhaps one day in the future, everyone will have the opportunity to bring their artistic vision to life and create high-definition video and audio using Movie Gen,” the blog post reads.

This entire article about this new technology looks to the future, noting that you can’t really use Movie Gen yet.
Chris Cox, Meta’s chief product officer, wrote on Threads that the company “isn’t ready to release this as a product anytime soon — it’s still expensive and takes too long to build — but we wanted to share our progress, Because the results are getting pretty impressive.
The company said it is looking to tweak the model before launching it to the public.
“As we continue to improve our model and move toward possible future releases, we will work closely with filmmakers and creators to incorporate their feedback,” Mehta wrote in the blog post. “Through a collaborative approach, we want to ensure that the tools we are creating help people enhance their inherent creativity in new ways they have never dreamed of. Imagine making a ‘day in the life’ video animation to be used on Reels and Text prompts to edit, or create custom animated birthday wishes for friends and send them via WhatsApp, the possibilities are endless as long as you use your creativity and self-expression.
