A PlayStation exclusive RPG long thought dead is surprisingly still in development, its developer has confirmed. Cygames‘ action RPG Project Awakening (Arise) got a stunning reveal as a PS4 exclusive game in 2018, but we’ve barely had any updates since

PlayStation exclusive RPG Project Awakening was first announced in 2016

Project Awakening was originally announced in 2016 at a Cygames Next 2016 event in Tokyo, before resurfacing as a PS4 console exclusive in 2018. In 2019, a “trial version,” subtitled Arise, was rated, but it never saw the light of day

To mark its 15th anniversary, Cygames recently sat down for an interview with Famitsu and offered a surprising update: Project Awakening is still in development. Platforms and release window were not revealed

“Development is, of course, steadily progressing,” Cygames president Koichi Watanabe said of Project Awakening. “What I can say at the moment is that it is really starting to take shape. Everyone on the team is working each day with a real sense of confidence that things are coming together.”

The statement suggests that Project Awakening is still a ways away, and it’s unlikely to launch in this console generation

“The overall direction remains largely the same, but as development has progressed, we’ve continued polishing it by adding new elements here and there,” Watanabe added
