When isGod of War Laufey coming out? We still don’t know. But we do know that it will still be released as a disc. That suggests it’s planned to arrive before Sony ends physical games on PlayStation in 2028
A disc version of God of War Laufey was confirmed on X today amid the ongoing backlash over Sony ending physical games. Santa Monica Studio was promoting its upcoming panel with the developers for the game at San Diego Comic-Con on July 24. Members of the cast will appear alongside Game Director Ariel Lawrence, with Head of Creative Cory Barlog moderating the panel
To head off a sea of angry comments from Sony fans about the move away from physical media, Santa Monica Studio wrote beneath the post, “We can confirm God of War Laufey will be available on disc.”

Unlike most other recent posts from a PlayStation-adjacent account, the comments section was generally filled with praise. “The last SMS Physical Release,” speculated one person. “End of an Era.”
There’s still a lot we don’t know about how the end of physical media will go for PlayStation. While Sony has promised no more new discs starting January 2028, PS5 games that have already been published can continue to have physical copies printed
The one big question this raises is whether these PS5 discs will still be playable on the PS6 in some waytill been collecting games physically will be out of luck
To solve this issue on its side of the great console divide, Microsoft is reportedly testing a way to digitize people’s physical Xbox game libraries ahead of Project Helix by granting them digital licenses after a disc is played on their Xbox Series X/S. So far at least, we haven’t heard about Sony exploring any similar workarounds
