The first two seasons of A Certain Magical Index are now available to stream on Crunchyroll. The science fantasy anime follows a student with the power to cancel supernatural abilities who gets caught up in conflicts involving powerful espers, magicians, and a mysterious nun carrying the knowledge of thousands of forbidden books.
The story takes place in Academy City, a technologically advanced city where students undergo experiments and training to develop supernatural abilities. Touma Kamijo, a student whose right hand can negate supernatural powers, encounters Index, a nun from the Church of England whose memory contains 103,000 magical grimoires. Protecting Index brings Touma into contact with organisations and individuals who want to exploit her knowledge.
The series features science fiction with magic, following Touma as he becomes involved in battles between rival groups. His ability, known as Imagine Breaker, can cancel supernatural phenomena through physical contact, making him a difficult opponent for both espers and magicians despite his otherwise ordinary appearance.
The anime is based on the light novel series written by Kazuma Kamachi and illustrated by Kiyotaka Haimura. J.C.Staff produced the television adaptation, with Hiroshi Nishikiori directing and Masanao Akahoshi handling the series composition for the first two seasons.
The first season premiered in October 2008 and ran for 24 episodes. A Certain Magical Index II followed in October 2010, also running for 24 episodes. A third season, A Certain Magical Index III, arrived in 2018.
The franchise also includes the 2013 film A Certain Magical Index: The Movie – The Miracle of Endymion. Its shared universe includes A Certain Scientific Railgun, which follows Mikoto Misaka and explores Academy City from another perspective.
