Playden for PS5 lets jailbroken consoles download and run some Steam games locally, with individual home-screen tiles and no Linux boot or PC streaming. Compatibility remains experimental, and online multiplayer and some launcher-dependent games are unsupported. Steam credentials are stored unencrypted, and users are advised to back up cloud saves.

Jailbroken PS5s can now download Windows games from a Steam library and run them locally on the console, without PC streaming. The tool behind it is Playden for PS5, an alpha launcher from developer leolobato that adapts the macOS version of Playden. Users sign in to Steam with a QR code, browse their library, download games, and launch each one from its own tile on the PS5 home screen.
Under the hood, Playden relies on prospero-win, a PS5 port of Wine. DXVK handles Direct3D 8-11, while Direct3D 12 games use VKD3D-Proton. Unlike Linux on the PS5, there is no separate OS to boot into, since Playden runs as a regular PS5 app. The launcher doesn’t run the game itself. It builds a separate PS5 app for each installed title, so files, settings and crashes stay isolated from the launcher and from other games.
The first public release landed on October 12, and version 0.5.0 added Direct3D 12 support, which opens the door to games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Deep Rock Galactic. Version 0.6.0 followed this week with USB and FTP game imports, 120Hz output, a 4K resolution option and additional display settings.

This is still very experimental. The compatibility list includes Half-Life 2, Fallout: New Vegas, Vampire Survivors, Hollow Knight, Cuphead, Portal 2, Dead Cells, Left 4 Dead 2 and Team Fortress 2, mostly older and indie titles, though plenty of others crash or refuse to start. Cyberpunk 2077 is listed as playable after a 13-minute controller test, but no frame rates were provided, so that shouldn’t be read as confirmation it runs well.

There are limits and risks. Online multiplayer isn’t supported, games with kernel-level anti-cheat can’t run, and titles that need launchers like the EA app aren’t supported yet. The developer warns that the Steam sign-in token is stored unencrypted on the console, and that Playden is an unofficial Steam client Valve doesn’t support, so any risk “is yours to accept.”

Anyone trying it should back up their cloud saves first, since a bug could overwrite them. It also goes without saying that a jailbroken PS5 is required.

The PS5 homebrew scene keeps moving, with jailbreaks and emulators arriving almost weekly. As we covered recently, modders are turning the PS5 into the gaming equivalent of the Infinity Gauntlet, with emulation, Windows support and even local AI models running on the console, and Steam on the PS5 is another sign of how far it has stretched.
