Virtual reality headsets help prepare HMP Lancaster Farms prisoners for release
A new Safety Support Suite has also been officially opened at the prison
Prisoners at HMP Lancaster Farms are using virtual reality headsets to practise everyday situations as they prepare for release.
A new Safety Support Suite has also been officially opened at the prison.
Lancashire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Clive Grunshaw, opened the suite, which was funded through his Lancashire Violence Reduction Network (LVRN).
It is aimed at helping prisoners prepare for life after release and reducing the risk of reoffending.
What the Safety Support Suite offers
During his visit, the Commissioner met prison staff, partners and prisoners to see how the suite supports people as they approach release.
The facility helps users become familiar with the support services available to them, including housing, employment and wellbeing support.
‘Terry’s Vision’ virtual reality project
The Commissioner also tried the virtual reality headsets, which were funded by the LVRN.
The project is known as ‘Terry’s Vision’.
It was developed following a workshop delivered by the LVRN in partnership with The Hope Collective and HM Prison and Probation Service.
According to the Commissioner’s office, the technology allows prisoners to practise everyday situations in a safe, immersive environment.
The office said it helps them develop the life skills needed to move back into the community.
What they said
