Steam Deck 2 Could Deliver Major Performance Gains as Rising RAM Costs Threaten Its Potential 2027 Launch.

The Steam Deck 2 could arrive sooner than expected, with reports that AMD is already benchmarking its next-generation processor for Valve’s handheld. But the prolonged RAM crisis could further muddy the launch timeline and raise manufacturing costs.

The next Steam Deck might be a major upgrade with a potential 2x speed gain and 24GB of memory. But Valve will have to balance performance, cost, and competition when determining whether to launch it in 2027 or 2028.

Steam Deck 2 Gainsborough Processor Appears in Benchmarks

According to information leaked by Moore’s Law Is Dead, AMD is developing a semi-custom processor with an unidentified partner. The chip is reportedly called Gainsborough, a name that has attracted attention because the original Steam Deck processor was called Aerith. Both names are associated with Final Fantasy VII, strengthening speculation that Gainsborough is intended for the Steam Deck 2.

Recent benchmark reports suggest the processor is already under test. The information is preliminary, but the claimed performance aligns with Valve’s stated goal of a 2x improvement over the original Steam Deck. The processor apparently packs 24GB of RAM, up from 16GB in the current iteration. Given the Steam Deck’s shared CPU/GPU memory, more capacity would help both processing and graphics demands.

CPU Improvements Could Benefit Unreal Engine 5 Games

The reported CPU performance improvements look promising. Unreal Engine 5 games can be very demanding on processors, especially with asset streaming and other background loads. If the CPU can’t keep up, the GPU may sit idle, causing stuttering.

This means that you might notice a faster CPU in demanding games. Although the GPU’s capabilities remain difficult to assess without finalized drivers, the reported overall improvement suggests meaningful progress.

The Steam Deck 2 does not necessarily need to outperform every competing handheld. Matching the general performance range of devices such as the ROG Xbox Ally X while maintaining Valve’s software experience could be a reasonable approach, particularly if stronger hardware would significantly increase the retail price.

RAM Crisis Could Push the Launch Toward 2028

The memory shortage presents a difficult challenge for Valve. Industry reports predict RAM prices could stay under pressure through late 2027 before conditions improve, though the timing is unclear.

If it launches in 2027, however, Valve might get its next-gen handheld out sooner, but component costs could make it pricey. Waiting until 2028 could mean better pricing, and the corporation might be able to supply stronger hardware without driving the retail price too high.

The current Steam Deck OLED can still run many games, including indies and several Unreal Engine 5 titles. As a result, current owners may not need an immediate upgrade, giving Valve flexibility in its launch schedule.

    SteamOS Remains a Major Advantage

Performance is only one part of the Steam Deck’s appeal. Valve’s devices differ from competitors thanks to SteamOS, its handheld-focused UI, regular upgrades, and overall usability.

Even if other manufacturers release faster handhelds, the Steam Deck 2 might still appeal because of its integrated software experience. Also, existing handheld owners with a capable device may want to keep using it rather than pay for a marginal improvement.

Meanwhile, the rising use of Unreal Engine 5 makes better CPU performance increasingly vital. Advanced rendering technologies can improve visual quality, but they can also create performance issues on power-limited systems if they aren’t optimized well enough.

Valve Must Balance Performance and Affordability

A 2027 release would be a good sign, but 2028 could be a better time to control costs and prepare for the PlayStation 6, Xbox Project Helix, and new handhelds from ASUS and Lenovo.

Ultimately, the reported Gainsborough benchmarks suggest the Steam Deck 2 is set for a major boost. It could deliver a 2x performance boost and 24GB of RAM, which is impressive. However, the current RAM shortage may determine whether Valve can offer this upgrade at a relatively affordable price.
