Roblox Is Now Down 38% in 2026: Is RBLX Stock Dead Money or Poised for a Comeback?

A child exploitation lawsuit, a Wall Street downgrade, and slipping spending per player have sent Roblox stock into a 38% freefall while the broader market climbs. Whether the platform’s surging user base can reverse that pain hinges on a single…

A legal setback and a Wall Street downgrade have deepened the slide in one of gaming’s best-known platforms. Roblox (NYSE:RBLX | RBLX Price Prediction) stock is down 38% year to date (YTD) to $50.41 in recent trading. The question now is whether the selloff has run its course or whether Roblox stock is turning into dead money.

At its core, Roblox runs a platform of user-created games and makes money when players buy Robux, its virtual currency. In contrast, Take-Two Interactive (NASDAQ:TTWO) publishes its own franchise games, while GameStop (NYSE:GME) sells games and gaming hardware. In 2026 so far, TTWO stock is down 20% to $204.79 while GME stock is up 31% to $26.25.

Lawsuit Ruling and Analyst Downgrade Pile On

In late September, a judge rejected Roblox’s bid to dismiss a child exploitation lawsuit brought by Los Angeles County. The ruling leaves the allegations to be tested in court and keeps child safety at the center of the Roblox story.

Days later, Jefferies downgraded Roblox stock to Underperform. It argued that the rally in Roblox stock after its Q2 2026 report had priced in too much growth in bookings, which track Robux spending. That critique lands at a sensitive moment, since Roblox’s bookings grew just 8% to $1.6 billion in Q2.

Safety work had already hurt Roblox’s outlook earlier this year. Alongside its Q1 2026 results, Roblox lowered its full-year revenue growth forecast to 20% to 25% after a mandatory age-check launch restricted communication for unverified users and slowed new user acquisition more than expected. By its July call, management declined to provide revised full-year guidance.

Take-Two and GameStop Point to a Roblox-Specific Problem

Meanwhile, Take-Two stock is down 20% YTD, a much smaller decline than the drop in Roblox stock. GameStop stock, in sharper contrast, is up 31% YTD. That gap points to pressure aimed directly at Roblox.

A sector fund tied to Roblox shows the same divide. The VanEck Video Gaming and eSports ETF (NASDAQ:ESPO) is down 3% YTD, even though Roblox stock made up 7% of its net assets as of June 30. For broad-market context, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSEARCA:SPY) is up 13% YTD.

VanEck’s fund also held Take-Two stock at a 6.9% weight and GameStop stock at 4.3% in the same filing. Such breadth makes its gap with Roblox stock more telling.

Users Keep Growing While Spending Per Player Slips

Roblox’s bull case rests on a daily user base that’s still growing. In Q2, Roblox’s daily active users reached 123 million, up 10% year over year (YoY), with Japan and India among its fastest-growing markets. Co-founder David Baszucki stated on the July call, “We’re really navigating a period of normalization we believe following a year of massive growth.”

Management also argues that Roblox’s discovery algorithm, now tuned for long-term retention, could eventually lift spending. Executives asserted that “the benefit of the incremental retention will more than outweigh the short-term hit to bookings,”. They declined to give a timeline. New products are part of that push. They include Build, an AI-powered creation tool, and Moments, a discovery feed Roblox stated lifted user retention substantially in early tests.

Slipping spending per player supports the bear case for Roblox. Roblox’s CFO noted that the weakness “was really around monetization,” with bookings per hour falling short of forecast, especially among younger users. For Q3 2026, Roblox forecast a YoY bookings decline of 14% to 18%.

Bookings Hold the Key to a Roblox Bounce

Roblox’s Q3 results arrive later this month, giving Roblox its next chance to change the narrative. A steadier bookings trend alongside a growing user base could support the case for a bounce, while another drop in spending per player could confirm the dead-money label.

Roblox’s biggest unresolved issue is the Los Angeles County case, which now moves forward in court. Position sizes should stay modest until Roblox’s bookings trend resolves.
