Marvel recently announced that their subscription service, Marvel Unlimited, will cease operations. It will be replaced by Marvel Comics Powered by WEBTOON (I think the name of this new service will just be Marvel Comics, which is nice and simple). I don’t know if everyone knew this was going to happen, and I just wasn’t paying attention, but this came as a complete shock. Marvel Unlimited has been a thing for 19 years. I’ve been an on-again, off-again subscriber for years. So, to see this giant fall was very surprising to me. But what now? What is Marvel Comics Powered by WEBTOON? How does it differ from Marvel Unlimited? How is it similar?
We don’t know a whole lot about the new service, so a lot of the answers to our questions won’t be answered until the service launches. But let’s get through the questions we can answer.
When Will Marvel Unlimited Shut Down?
Here are the important dates that you have to know, courtesy of Marvel’s FAQ page:
- Oct. 5, 2026 – Users will no longer be able to purchase a subscription to Marvel Unlimited.
- December 7, 2026 – Users will no longer be able to read comics on Marvel Unlimited.
- December 21, 2026 – Members will no longer be able to access their library through Marvel Unlimited.
- December 28, 2026 – Marvel Unlimited will officially be shut down.
So, to sum it all up, you will be able to read comics on MU until December 7th. You will be able to access your library of comics on MU until the 21st.
I paid for an annual subscription. What’s going to happen with that?
Yes, you won’t get an entire refund; however, you will receive a refund based on the amount of time left in your subscription on November 16th, 2026. For example, my annual subscription was scheduled to run out on December 12, 2026, so I do expect to be compensated to some degree. Maybe like $5 or less. I’ll come back and edit this article when that refund hits my bank account.
My Thoughts on Marvel Unlimited Shutting Down
It’s honestly a bittersweet feeling. I’ve read so many great comics because of MU. I’ve been introduced to a ton of great characters because of MU. So to see it be sunset is sad. However, MU is not without its problems. The app was fine, nothing special. The Marvel website is godawful, though. Trying to read MU through desktop – I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy.
It’s sad seeing MU go, but it’s replacement has the chance to be even better. Speaking of its replacement, let’s go over the few details we know about it.
Marvel Comics Powered by WEBTOON
Here are the few scare details about this new subscription, based on its website:
- November 16, 2026 – This new subscription services officially launches. This is also the first day that you will be able to transfer over your library from MU.
- 35,000+ comics will be available. This is roughly around the same number that MU touted. Maybe MU was lower, but it was in the same range.
- There will be 2 tiers: The Base tier and the Ultimate tier.
- Base tier: $9.99/month or $69.99/year. Gives you full access to the subscription service’s library
- Ultimate tier: $12.49/month or $99/year. Gives you full access to the library, plus gives you access to the latest issues – 30 days after print release. This is much better than MU, which made you wait 3 months after print release.

Another important piece of info is that they’re currently offering a founder’s deal. 40% off Ultimate annual, which brings the price down from $99.99 to $59.99.
Like I said earlier, I liked Marvel Unlimited, but there’s no denying that it could’ve been better. So, I’m optimistic about this new subscription, and I can’t wait for its launch next month.
