Before she was sprinkling pixie dust across Disney intros, Tinker Bell had already developed a bit of an image (and attitude) problem. Born from a baby’s first laugh, she is the tiny, blonde, and famously jealous companion of Peter Pan, The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up. But in 2008 came Tinker Bell, the first of many adventures Tink would go on with her own friends in her own world.
With Tink came Pixie Hollow, an entire world populated by fairies with different personalities and talents. Before we could even say ‘pixie dust,’ what could have been a one-off spin-off became a substantial little franchise. Of course, Tink wasn’t the only tiny heroine to have enormous adventures. Thumbelina had already been singing her way through peril, but Tink’s corner of the fairy world is just as elaborate and dramatic.
So if you’ve never been to Pixie Hollow, then how should you visit it? Release order is the way to go, and it’s pretty straightforward. There are 6 feature-length films, a television special, and a fun short to whiz through. The chronology of events within Tink’s universe lines up with the order of the movies’ release. Now, with some faith, trust, pixie dust (and Disney+), shall we get started?

As the first movie in the franchise, Tinker Bell is the obvious starting point. The film takes Tink (Mae Whitman) and gives her a place to go, people to meet, and things (see: occasional mishap) to do. Tink arrives in Pixie Hollow and discovers that, true to her name, her talent is tinkering. You know, fixing, inventing, building things. In the beginning, Tink isn’t a fan of this, but eventually she learns to embrace what makes her special. That’s what we love about Disney, huh? There’s always a heartwarming lesson at the end.
Tinker Bellis best watched first because we meet a lot of characters who become important as we move through the films. We’re introduced to fellow tinker fairies Bobble and Clank, Silvermist (water fairy), Iridessa (light fairy), Rosetta (garden fairy), Fawn (animal fairy), Vidia (fast-flying fairy and antagonist, at least at first), and learn how they contribute to the changing of the seasons. Tink isn’t perfect straight off the bat; she’s slightly difficult, stubborn, and determined to prove people wrong, and in my opinion, that gives the movie some personality. With its gentle and colorful tone, Tinker Bellis ideal for newcomers and fans of cozy world-building. Don’t expect apocalyptic stakes right this minute; before Disney can send Tink into treasure hunts and mysterious woods (and it does), it has to first give her (and us) a home.

A year later, we’re welcomed back to Pixie Hollow with Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure. After Tink accepts her talent, this second film gives her a chance to showcase them. She is entrusted with creating a special scepter for autumn festivities, but after she damages the precious moonstone when her temper gets the better of her (yikes!), she has to travel beyond Pixie Hollow to make things right. Good on her for taking accountability, though!
On that journey, Tink becomes better friends with dust-keeper fairy, Terence, and Blaze the firefly. (Every fantasy hero needs a trusty sidekick!) Lost Treasure ups things a bit, because without the scepter, Pixie Hollow’s supply of pixie dust is in serious trouble, and in my book, that’s a bit of a problem. Tink gets into a scrape, and the miniature quest beats gives the film a livelier edge that adventure fans will love, especially as Tink is working with a deadline. It’s not an easy-breezy adventure; she has to figure things out and get back before it’s too late. If How to Train Your Dragon was your friendship-and-adventure jam, then Lost Treasureis where you’ll have fun. (Blaze is also such a cutie, so tune in just for him!)

Now comes my personal favorite movie of the Tinker Bell franchise: Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue. The title says it all, but what you’re going to find out right now is that Tink isn’t the one doing the rescuing, but the one being rescued. We trade the bustling Pixie Hollow for the human world, but the adventure here is more intimate as separate worlds collide. Without meaning to, Tink meets Lizzy, a little girl whose dad pays more attention to his work than her.
Lizzy believes in fairies and forms an unexpected bond with Tink, but Tink’s friends think she needs saving and charge towards Lizzy’s home in the countryside. The film shows us two adventures—the one Tink has with Lizzy and the one where the other fairies go on the rescue mission. The change in setting gives Great Fairy Rescue a completely different flavor and sense of scale. The relationship between Tink and Lizzy is also the sweet, emotional heart of the film. The film shows us Tink through Lizzy’s eyes and that makes the character feel magical again. Surprisingly, Vidia becomes an ally too, so everything is coming up Tink (except for when Lizzy’s dad wants to expose Tink’s existence). Fans of unlikely friendship stories (clearly me) will find Great Fairy Rescueto be an endearing entry in Tink’s story.

Before we dive into the rest of the films, Disney brought us Pixie Hollow Games, a 23-minute television special, where we take a tiny detour and let the stylish and sassy red-haired garden fairy Rosetta have her moment in the sun. Rosetta teams up with Chloe, a newcomer, to end the garden fairies’ losing streak against the storm fairies in the titular games.
Pixie Hollow Games is a fun, fairy-sized sports adventure with competition, teamwork, and rival teams. The special helps make Pixie Hollow into a real place where fairies actually live because the Games showcase the community and not just as a place for the latest Tink-based adventure (which we also love, but there’s a time and place for everything). Pixie Hollow Games doesn’t really add anything story-wise to the upcoming Tinker Bell movies, so if you want to skip it, feel free to. But if you want low-stakes excitement without worrying about what new trouble Tink and the fairies have gotten into, then give this light palate cleanser on their home turf a try!

If you tell Tink not to do something, chances are she’s going to do it anyway. We see that happen in Secret of the Wings, where Tink has been forbidden to go into the Winter Woods, but guess what? She saunters in there. Classic Tink. We’re introduced to a frost fairy, Periwinkle, who brings a new personality in a different visual world, and it’s a welcome change from the lived-in, warm, floral colors of Pixie Hollow. There’s also a really cute love story that I’ll let you discover for yourself!
Compared to Great Fairy Rescue, this film is much more fantastical and has an atmospheric quality with its snow and frost. The Winter Woods look and feel distinctive and are a great backdrop for Tink to discover something about her own identity. The world-building is also interesting as it plays with Pixie Hollow’s mythology and gives our heroine and the story another emotional dimension. Periwinkle is another lovable addition, and we find out a magical secret that makes the film all the more intriguing, because now there’s a piece of knowledge that feels genuinely personal to our Tink. People who loved Frozen for its icy setting and sibling-centred emotional story will want to move Secret of the Wings to the top of their lists. (Well, after first watching the entries above.)

We’ve got another bite-sized short in Pixie Hollow Bake Offwhere the fairies are doing something super ordinary like making cake. Like the Pixie Hollow Games,Pixie Hollow Bake Off is also not essential viewing, but if you’re a completionist and a comfort-watcher, then don’t remove this one from the queue. It might just give you a sugar rush. (Get it?)
The premise is simple: Tink and her friends take part in a baking competition against literal baking fairies. It’s an ambitious feat, so can they pull it off? No major adventure, no lost treasure, just a 6-minute short where the supporting cast gets another chance to bounce off of one another and Tink uses her tinkering instincts in a bake-off. (And with that, we’ve achieved cinema.) There’s also a really fun The Office-esque documentary element where the characters speak to the camera, and that adds an extra lightweight element to the whole thing. There’s nothing more I can really say here, so how about checking it out for yourself?

Okay, thus far, we’ve got a moonstone-topped sceptre, a day or two in England, snow-laden woods, and some cakes. What’s missing? Oh yeah, pirates and a soon-to-be villain of a famous franchise. Enter Tinker Bell and the Pirate Fairy, which takes the franchise into swashbuckling territory with a new character, Zarina. It’s a full-on fantasy adventure as Zarina leaves Pixie Hollow and her job as dust-keeper and joins the pirates of Skull Rock as their captain, and Tink and the gang set off after her.
That’s not all. The crew finds themselves facing a young man named James. If you think his presence here is a bit suspicious, then your instincts are correct, because this is none other than the future Captain Hook. The Pirate Fairytakes the stakes of Lost Treasure and ups the ante. It brings together Tinker Bell’s universe and Peter Pan’s universe, and it’s a pretty awesome crossover. Zarina is also an interesting character at the centre of the story; she’s a troublemaker but you can’t really root for her downfall. The tonal shift in this film is entertaining and doesn’t seem like it’s doing too much. If you enjoyed Pirates of the Caribbean or the original Peter Pan, then The Pirate Fairy is an easy recommendation for the adventure-first viewer.

Just like that, we’re at the finale. To close out this Tinker Bell marathon, we have Tinker Bell and the Legend of the NeverBeast, which brings Fawn to the forefront and gives the animal-loving fairy the spotlight. Despite Tink being in the title and in the story, Fawn is the emotional engine of this vehicle, and just that factor sets this entry apart from the others.
When Fawn encounters Gruff, a gigantic, mysterious beast from a Pixie Hollow legend, everyone thinks of the creature as potentially dangerous. But Fawn isn’t convinced. What follows is a lovely friendship that develops between the two. The tone of this last film is noticeably emotional. TheLegend of the NeverBeast proves that after all these years, Pixie Hollow doesn’t necessarily need Tinker Bell to lead the metaphorical army and that it’s just as compelling with one of her friends in the driver’s seat. If you loved films like The Sea Beast for its misunderstood monster trope, then the Legend of the NeverBeast is sure to appeal to you. It’s the perfect ending, but my only word of warning is that this movie might make you sob.
