    Overview

    • AI could transform game development, NPCs, content creation, and player experiences.

    • Cloud gaming may make high-end titles accessible across more devices.

    • Creators, handhelds, and cross-platform play could further reshape gaming ecosystems.

The gaming industry is entering a period in which the boundaries between platforms, creators, and players are increasingly blurred. Artificial intelligence, cloud gaming, handheld devices, and user-generated content are already changing how games are made and consumed.

Industry forecasts point to continued growth through 2027, with PwC projecting global video game revenue to reach USD 312 billion in 2027, up from USD 262 billion in 2023.

Here are seven gaming trends that could define the year ahead.

Artificial Intelligence Will Move Deeper into Game Development

AI will become a more common part of the industry’s development pipeline by 2027. Game developers are currently using it for coding, quality assurance, and asset creation, among other things.

According to BCG, 50% of game studios will use AI by 2027, and at least 7,300 games on Steam will mention AI. Approximately 20% of all new games published on Steam mentioned the use of AI by 2025, a figure double that of the year before.

The technology may also affect how players experience games. AI-controlled NPCs, adaptive dialogue, and a more responsive environment may give players greater freedom to interact with the game.

However, AI may not replace developers in creating video games. In addition to speeding up some processes, AI may pose job-related, copyright, and originality issues. Recent studies show that while AI is revolutionizing the gaming industry, human creativity is still the core of the video game design process.

Cloud Gaming Could Become More Accessible

Cloud gaming has long promised to reduce the importance of expensive gaming hardware. That promise could become more relevant in 2027 as services make it easier to play demanding games across phones, PCs, TVs and other supported devices.

BCG found that 60% of surveyed gamers had tried cloud gaming, with 80% of those users reporting a positive experience. The firm projects cloud gaming revenue to rise from around USD 1.4 billion in 2025 to USD 18.3 billion by 2030.

Microsoft’s latest move is another indication of where the market could be heading. Starting in November 2026, Xbox Cloud Gaming
is introducing a pay-as-you-go option, allowing users to purchase cloud playtime without subscribing to Game Pass.

For players, that could make cloud gaming less tied to long-term subscriptions.

Handheld Gaming Will Continue its Ris

Handheld gaming is no longer limited to dedicated consoles. Gaming PCs, gaming hybrids, and ever-growing mobile hardware capabilities are redefining portable gaming.

The latest hardware developments emphasize the trend. The Nvidia RTX Spark targets small Windows devices, while Acer demonstrates novel handheld concepts and works on the Predator Atlas 7 launch. The PwC report also highlights the comeback of handheld gaming devices as a trend shaping the industry.

In 2027, gamers may find more ways to enjoy PC-level gaming in portable devices.

User-Generated Content Will Become a Bigger Part of Gaming

The player is increasingly becoming a creator. Platforms such as Roblox and Fortnite have demonstrated how games can become ecosystems where users create experiences rather than play content made by studios. BCG says 40% of surveyed gamers are consuming more user-generated content than they did a year earlier.

This trend could accelerate as development tools become easier to use. AI-assisted tools can reduce the technical hurdles faced by aspiring designers and enable small teams and individual developers to play around with game design.

This might lead to a gaming scenario in which the communities decide what is played, marketed, and monetized.

Cross-Platform Gaming Will Become Increasingly Important

There is now less distinction between consoles, PC, and mobile gaming as time passes. Players are increasingly interested in taking their games with them as they move between different platforms. The trend of moving away from local hardware to access games is being driven by cloud technology.

BCG refers to this trend as a movement toward a hardware-agnostic gaming ecosystem, where gamers will play on multiple platforms. For game developers, this means building games for broader gaming ecosystems rather than centering the gaming experience on a single platform.

Gaming’s Creator Economy Will Grow Further

Gaming and online creators are becoming increasingly connected. Streamers, influencers and community leaders can now have a direct impact on which games players discover and play.

This is particularly visible around user-generated platforms. BCG estimates that revenues to creators from Fortnite and Roblox alone exceeded USD 1.5 billion in 2025, underscoring the growing economic relevance of creator-led gaming platforms.

Developers might find themselves not just competing for players but creators as well in 2027. That could make creator tools, monetization systems and community features a core part of game development.

    Game Discovery Could Become Harder

More accessible development tools have an obvious downside: there could be too many games. BCG has warned that generative AI could lead to a flood of new titles, making curation and discovery increasingly important.

The problem is already visible in the growing number of games being released. As development becomes faster and cheaper, having a good game may not be enough to guarantee that players find it.

That could make recommendations, creators, communities, platform algorithms, and word of mouth increasingly important in deciding which games break through.

What 2027 Could Mean for Gamers

Perhaps the most important transformation would not be the introduction of a particular technological innovation
, but rather the convergence of multiple technologies. The implications of artificial intelligence, for instance, could transform development; cloud gaming could reduce hardware restrictions; handhelds could make premium gaming accessible on the go; and content creators could be at the center of discovery.

All of this could create a gaming ecosystem that is no longer device-dependent.
