XBOX Series X FSR 4.1 Could Close the Gap With PS5 Pro

XBOX Series X FSR 4.1 promises sharper visuals and improved performance through AI-driven upscaling on existing RDNA 2 hardware.

Console graphics are breaking free from traditional hardware constraints, thanks to AI-driven upscaling that boosts visual quality and speed. Sony has launched PSSR on the PS5 Pro and QSSR on the standard PlayStation 5, and AMD has developed FSR 4.1 for XBOX Series X and Series S. These technologies could keep current-generation consoles alive by delivering crisper images and steadier frame rates without hardware changes.

What Is XBOX FSR 4.1 and How Does It Run on RDNA 2?

Many thought AMD’s FSR 4 launch was limited to the newest RDNA 3 and RDNA 4 architectures with dedicated AI hardware accelerators. The XBOX Series X and Series S feature RDNA 2, which lacks dedicated tensor cores like NVIDIA’s RTX GPUs or the PS5 Pro’s specialized machine learning technology.

But AMD also streamlined and scaled down FSR 4.1 to run on less powerful hardware. The XBOX Series X also supports native INT8 instructions and has 52 active compute units, compared with the standard PlayStation 5’s 36. This could give Microsoft’s console more room for AI upscaling.

Developers still need to patch their games to add FSR 4.1. It’s not a system-wide setting that would automatically upgrade the whole XBOX catalog, but supported titles could see major gains over previous FSR 3.1 implementations.

Comparing XBOX FSR 4.1, PS5 QSSR, and PS5 Pro PSSR

The PS5 Pro combines dedicated machine learning technology and an improved GPU to execute PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) for high-quality image reconstruction with low performance overhead.

Meanwhile, the standard PlayStation 5 uses a lighter version of Sony’s upscaling technology, called Quick Scaled Super Resolution (QSSR). QSSR relies on other processing methods without dedicated AI blocks, which can add to frame-time cost. But it can increase temporal stability and reduce shimmering on foliage and tiny lines.

A strong implementation of AMD’s FSR 4.1 could let XBOX close the feature gap with sophisticated reconstruction through an improved RDNA 2 implementation. That said, real results will vary based on game and developer integration.

    Image Quality and Performance Trade-Offs

Older upscalers can cause shimmering hair, flickering fences, and ghosting behind fast-moving objects. AI-based systems like QSSR and FSR 4.1 try to reconstruct sub-pixel information more accurately, delivering cleaner images in motion.

Performance is still a significant concern. Depending on the game and implementation, QSSR may add a frame-time penalty on a standard PS5. The XBOX Series X’s 52 compute units and INT8 compatibility could let it absorb some of FSR 4.1’s processing overhead.

Developers may also lower the internal rendering resolution while reconstructing a sharper 4K output, potentially enabling 60fps at supported performance levels. That said, these enhancements aren’t universal across titles.

Developer Support Will Determine FSR 4.1’s Success

FSR 4.1 won’t automatically upgrade existing titles; developers must integrate each game individually. Developers have to patch them. Older games might never get support.

So existing and next-generation games with upgraded development tools would be the biggest winners. Adoption will depend on how well the technology works on XBOX hardware, and whether studios think it is worth implementing.

Can XBOX Series X FSR 4.1 Beat the PS5 Pro?

FSR 4.1 will not automatically make the XBOX Series X a PS5 Pro killer. The more powerful Sony console still has advantages in machine learning hardware acceleration and PSSR reconstruction quality. Still, FSR 4.1 might really push XBOX visuals and show that RDNA 2 still has a lot of promise.

Next-gen consoles may not arrive until about 2028, meaning current-gen systems could last several more years. Rumors of $1,600 for the PlayStation 6 and $1,800 for Microsoft’s Project Helix are just rumors, but with hardware costs rising, it becomes increasingly necessary to keep supporting current platforms.

Ultimately, FSR 4.1 could help XBOX Series X and Series S push out better-looking games for longer. Its success will depend on developer uptake, real-world image quality, and performance improvements across supported titles.
