While PlayStation appears unwavering in its decision to stop producing physical discs in January 2028, Microsoft, for its part, seems to be seeking alternatives to this format. Indeed, a job posting published online by the American giant points in this direction.
Xbox is currently recruiting a Game Supply Strategist focused primarily on physical media. However, the job description makes no mention of the discs themselves.
“The Xbox Games Supply Strategist will coordinate the launch of physical Xbox games across all platforms, lead development & oversee exectuion of global supply positioning strategies across all stages of the product lifecycle, ensure the invetory is positioned to deliver working capital/cost/service goals, and oversee the sales & channel execution of those games. You”ll work closely with Product Marketing, Finance & various groups within supply chain to establish & manage supply and sales plan of record. Every day will bring a new challenge, and you’ll be continually looking for ways to drive business profitability by planning and executing a predictable, reliable & low-cost supply chain.”
While it’s too early to jump to conclusions, XBOX might be considering a new physical format for its games, such as cartridges that would contain a license or, in some cases, a full game, something similar to what Nintendo is doing with the Switch 2. Players could even buy an empty cartridge and load one or more titles onto it using a hypothetical program that would allow a digital license to be transferred to such a physical medium. Of course, these are just hypotheses for now.
Microsoft is hiring a Xbox Games Supply Strategist.
The primary responsibilities of this role include overseeing the launch of physical Xbox game releases, managing their global distribution strategy, inventory planning, sales execution, and retail channel operations.
