Xbox just announced its plan to let players digitize their physical games for use across any number of supported devices, from PCs to handhelds to (presumably) the upcoming Project Helix next-gen PC/console hybrid. And just like that, they’ve made PlayStation look even worse for its tone-deaf, player-last decision to stop selling physical copies of its games starting in early 2028 — the backlash from which isn’t going away.

Setting aside how rare it’s been for Xbox to one-up PlayStation since the infamous “How to share your games on PS4” fatality move that killed the Xbox One before that generation even started, what matters in the end is that the digital future is happening, and Microsoft is handling that transition far, far better than Sony is.

And yes, it is a transition. If it’s not, it’s because it already happened. But this is where Xbox is respecting players and PlayStation isn’t. While Sony cuts off physical media support entirely, Microsoft — who, by the way, has yet to officially say, “Yes we’re still going to continue to sell games on discs,” because they in fact might not be doing that if Helix ends up omitting an optical drive, as I’d expect it probably will for cost reasons, if nothing else — is laying out a clear plan for players that says, “Hey, we respect the game-purchasing choices you’ve made in the past, and we want you to be able to continue to have access to those in the future.” And most importantly, “Here’s how we’re going to do it.”

That last bit is the most significant part. I’ve spent years complaining about how Microsoft should message from a position of confidence and strength, rather than take the reactive, stepping-on-rakes defensive position that we’ve become accustomed to seeing from them. This disc-to-digital initative is the kind of thing that Xbox needs to do a heck of a lot more of. The company has picked a great time to be proactive, as physical media is proving to be a hot-button issue for gamers: as it should be, frankly. Game preservation matters. Having choices matters. We still need actual legislation from governments around the world to make sure that when a player buys something digitally, they actually own it and companies can’t just revoke those purchases whenever the heck they feel like it, but that’s a different conversation.

This disc-to-digital initative is the kind of thing that Xbox needs to do a heck of a lot more of.

And so, Xbox will let players simply insert their discs into their Xbox console. and that ownership license converts into a digital copy of the game. “Your physical game library is more than a collection of discs,” Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said. “It holds years of memories and stories worth preserving. Starting next week, Xbox Insiders can unlock a digital entitlement for supported physical games. We’ll start with thousands of titles and add more as we can.”

There is no doubt a ton of work on the back end to make this a seamless experience for players, so I don’t want to pretend that this was just some quick, “well duh!” kind of fix. Credit to the teams at Xbox who are working on this to bring it into reality. It’s the same kind of effort that went into Xbox’s player-first backwards compatibility initiative. From a gamer’s perspective, this is exactly how it should be. Respect our game discs, let them continue to work, but provide players an easy way to bring those games forward into the next generation of Xbox hardware as physical media, by and large, recedes into the hedges like that Homer Simpson gif.

It remains to be seen whether Xbox’s disc-to-digital program will eventually extend all the way back to Xbox 360 and, dare I hope, original Xbox games. The good news here is that Xbox’s history with this kind of initiative suggests that there’s a good chance they will. But for right here and now, Xbox is doing the right thing here and doing it the right way: respect your players, and perhaps in time, that will translate to some new (or regained) loyalty. Kudos to Microsoft here; they got this one right.
