All ‘Wizards Of Waverly Place’ TV Shows & Movies In Order
There has been a lot of discussion about who should be on Disney Channel’s Mount Rushmore. The hypothetical monument exists without Selena Gomez after her work as Alex Russo in the Wizards of Waverly Place (2007) universe. She also played the character in the unforgettable crossover event, Wizards on Deck with Hannah Montana (2009). Gomez left her mark as Alex Russo, starting nearly 20 years ago with Wizards of Waverly Place.
Across TV shows and Disney Channel Original Movies, the show’s universe would expand with new characters and places that test the Russo family and their powers. Some original fans may be unaware of the latest additions to the shared universe. Meanwhile, newer fans may not know the extent of it. Either way, if you’re looking for something comforting and magical to watch this Halloween season, here’s how to watch the Wizards of Waverly Place TV shows and movies in order. You can watch them on Disney+, Hulu, and more.

After the success of Lizzie McGuire (2001), The Suite Life of Zack & Cody (2005), and Hannah Montana (2006), Disney Channel debuted Wizards of Waverly Place. By following three siblings who are wizards-in-training, the show leans more heavily into the fantasy element popularized on the network by That’s So Raven (2004). Gomez’s Alex is one of those teens, alongside Alex’s younger brother Max (Jake T. Austin) and older brother Justin (David Henrie). They’re trained by their father, Jerry (David DeLuise), who gave up his powers when he fell in with a mortal, and Alex, Justin, and Max’s mother, Theresa (Maria Canals-Barrera).
Wizards of Waverly Place gets better every time I watch it, and I didn’t think that was possible since I adored it so much as a kid. The cast has such great, believable chemistry. The jokes land better, the storylines come across even sharper and more streamlined, and the characters are so well-written. Because the show has four seasons with more than 20 episodes each, there’s just so much space for Wizards of Waverly Place to tell relatable and serialized stories. The series can then satisfyingly (besides where Max ends up) culminate with the family wizard competition, where only one sibling should keep their powers. Just know, there’s a twist!

Technically, you can watch Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie after you finish the series. It doesn’t really impact the show’s overall continuity. It’s sort of like The Suite Life Movie (2011) in that regard. It’s a good companion but not necessary. However, if you want the total picture, the movie will serve your viewing experience best if you watch it after Wizards of Waverly Place Season 2 and before you start Season 3. The Disney Channel Original Movie (DCOM) takes the Russo family to the Caribbean for a magic-free vacation that gradually becomes the opposite.
Alex accidentally casts a spell that creates an alternate reality where her parents never met, so no one in her family knows each other. As if that’s not enough, the siblings will start to lose their memories as a result. When the stone is stolen from them, the only option to reverse the spell is to have an impromptu family wizard competition between Alex and Justin (Max literally disappears), in which Alex begs Justin to remember her as his annoying little sister. It’s some of the most emotionally intense content in the franchise, and Gomez sells every second. Of course, the movie resolves with a happy ending where everything is back to normal.

Wizards of Waverly Place ended its four-season run in 2012. When the show ended, I thought that was it. I never expected that the franchise would return with The Wizards Return: Alex vs. Alex–a TV special, not a DCOM. It’s also an exciting development for the franchise because Selena Gomez plays two versions of Alex and serves as an executive producer on the project. Weirdly, David Henrie is the only cast member who doesn’t return for The Wizards Return: Alex vs. Alex. You can expect all of your other Wizards of Waverly Place favorites, though.
After winning the family wizard competition, Alex tries to prove herself worthwhile but ends up using her powers to accidentally create an “evil” version of herself. Chaos ensues with the help of the antagonistic Dominic (Beau Mirchoff), and the Russos are once again in danger. Alex selflessly gives up her magic to defeat herself, but her powers are reinstated by the Wizard Tribunal she’d go on to work for one day. After all, Alex proves (as if she didn’t in the four seasons of the show) that she is capable of using her magic for good, even against herself.

Wizards Beyond Waverly Place picks up on Justin Russo’s 34th birthday, which places this sequel series a good decade and some after the original series. Despite all of the effort to give Justin powers after losing the family wizard competition so that he can be the Headmaster at Wiztech, he no longer has that job. Thankfully, that change becomes a plot point for Wizards Beyond Waverly Place. However, the more pressing matter is Billie (Janice LeAnn Brown).
Alex brings Billie to Justin’s house to live with his family so that Justin can train Billie, a young wizard, because there’s a prophecy that she will destroy the world. No pressure! The show has a much shorter episodic run across only three seasons. It also doesn’t feature the entire cast, noticeably excluding Max beyond a few off-screen interactions. Even so, it has some great moments and is enjoyable if you don’t compare it to the original or get caught up in the details.
