‘Verity’ opened to $32.6 million and took the no. 1 spot. ‘Digger’ collapsed with just $8 million and landed in fifth place. That gave Tom Cruise his lowest opening in 19 years.
The numbers are estimates from Sunday. Final figures arrive on Monday. Some outlets list ‘Verity’ at $32.7 million, so small shifts are possible.
Digger by the numbers
Digger was projected to earn $8 million from about 3,300 North American theaters. Deadline puts the theater count at 3,321.
The film started slowly. Thursday previews brought in $1.2 million. Thursday and Friday together reached $3.3 million.
The weekend total landed at $8 million. That is well below what the studio hoped for. Tracking services had the film near $30 million months ago.
Worldwide, the film has made $20 million.
Lowest Cruise opening since 2007
The last time Cruise opened this low was 2007 with Lions for Lambs. That drama made $6.7 million. That film was far cheaper. It reportedly cost $35 million.
Digger cost much more. The budget was at least $125 million. Some reports say it could reach $180 million. Other outlets cite figures above $160 million.
Deadline ran a separate analysis of the damage. It estimated Warner Bros. could lose around $150 million on the film. That figure is an industry estimate, not an official number.
MovieWeb wrote that Digger is on track to be the biggest bomb of 2026.
Mixed audience reaction
Audiences gave Digger a C+ CinemaScore. Deadline reports Verity received the same grade. Critics were also split.
A C+ is a weak grade for a film that needs strong word of mouth. Weak scores usually mean steep drops in the second weekend.
Warner Bros. in transition
The release came at a tense time for the studio. Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy are exiting Warner Bros. leadership. The two had led the film division.
That timing makes the opening look worse. The studio is changing leaders while its biggest fall release struggles.
Cruise spoke up before the weekend results. He said he is proud of what the team created. He did not comment on the box office numbers.
Verity takes the top spot
Amazon MGM’s Verity had a much better weekend. It is an R-rated psychological thriller. It stars Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett.
The film opened in 3,510 North American theaters. Thursday and Friday brought in $15.1 million. Some early projections had been as high as $33.6 million.
Worldwide, Verity made $62.5 million. It reportedly cost $40 million to produce. That means the film nearly recouped its budget in one weekend of global sales.
A Colleen Hoover hit
Verity is based on a Colleen Hoover novel. It posted the second-biggest opening among recent Hoover adaptations.
The audience skewed heavily female. Women made up 78% of opening weekend moviegoers.
Amazon MGM also made a smart scheduling call. The studio placed Verity directly against a high-profile Cruise film, and it paid off. The thriller also benefited from the start of spooky season.
The rest of the top five
Resident Evil held second place with $12.5 million in its third weekend.
Digger finished behind more than just Verity. It came in below Primetime, Heart of the Beast, Resident Evil and Verity. Being outearned by holdovers is a bad sign for a major star vehicle.
The overall market is strong. The domestic box office for 2026 has reached $7.95 billion. That is a 19 percent increase over the same point in 2025.
Digger’s failure appears to be a film-specific problem. It does not signal a wider slump.
