More than 1,000 people packed into Flaherty Park Community Center on Saturday, August 22, for the 2026 Wake Forest Comic-Con, a free, single-day celebration of comics, collectibles and pop culture that has quietly grown into one of the town’s bigger community draws. Seventeen vendors set up shop in the center’s main gymnasium, selling everything from vintage Marvel and DC issues to buttons, stickers and hats, and organizers say the convention will return again next year.

The event is a joint effort between the Town of Wake Forest Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources Department and Brandon Wright, owner of downtown shop Play4Life Comics & Used Books at 149 S. White St. According to the Town of Wake Forest, NC, the day featured what organizers described as an amazing cast of characters roaming the gym alongside the vendor tables. Among the sellers was CBC Collectibles, a dealer based more than 100 miles away in Hickory, North Carolina, who offered silver and bronze-age Marvel comics at 25 percent off, along with $20 hats, $4 buttons (or three for $10), and $4 stickers (or three for $10).

A Free Event Built for a Growing Town

Admission and parking were both free, with lots at the community center and adjacent Flaherty Park open to attendees, according to Fun 4 Raleigh Kids’ event listing. Overflow visitors were directed toward parking near the park’s pickleball courts. The convention ran from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., fitting a full day of browsing into a single Saturday session.

Flaherty Park Community Center, located at 1226 N. White St., houses a regulation high-school gymnasium along with an arts and crafts room and a multimedia space that can seat up to 550 people without tables, per the Town of Wake Forest’s facility page. The broader park also includes five baseball and softball fields, a dog park, lighted tennis courts and seven pickleball courts, tying the comic convention into a much larger recreational campus. From Paid Hall Event to Free Town Tradition

Vendor registration for this year’s show opened back in April, requiring a $100 fee for a 10-by-10 space in the gymnasium and a mandatory background check before approval, according to Wake Forest Parks & Recreation’s registration portal. Vendors were required to bring their own tables, a detail that underscores how the town balances free admission for attendees with structured oversight of who sets up shop.

The convention’s current scale is a marked shift from its origins. Wright’s pop-culture convention began at the 5,000-square-foot Wake Forest Renaissance Centre, where organizers charged a $5 admission fee and the event started with just a handful of vendor tables, according to a Facebook post recounting the show’s history. The event moved to Flaherty Park Community Center for the first time in 2025, when it drew more than 30 vendors, according to the Town of Wake Forest. This year’s vendor count of 17 came in lower than that prior figure, though this year’s showing still pulled in a crowd north of 1,000 attendees.

Part of a Broader Pop-Culture Push

Wake Forest Comic-Con isn’t the town’s only pop-culture programming. The Town of Wake Forest also hosted a companion Comic Book & Toy Expo at the same Flaherty Park venue back on March 21, focused specifically on vintage comics, Pokémon cards and rare action figures. And in February, the town’s Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources Department ran the free Battle in the Forest esports tournament featuring Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, live-streamed on Twitch and co-sponsored by Brightspeed Fiber Internet.

The expanding slate of programming tracks with Wake Forest’s rapid growth. U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts figures cited in Hoodline’s coverage of the town’s suburban boom put the town’s population at roughly 56,764 residents with a median household income near $120,777, reflecting the kind of population surge that has made Wake Forest one of the Triangle region’s most sought-after suburbs. That growth appears to be feeding directly into demand for family-friendly, low-cost events like Comic-Con.

For now, this year’s edition leaves behind a snapshot of a small downtown comic shop’s grassroots convention that has grown, gym floor by gym floor, into a fixture of the town’s recreation calendar.
