Among everything Marvel Studios has brought to the small screen over the years, one ongoing narrative has emerged as a rare and interesting thing. WandaVision – the first streaming series to arrive in the MCU – was an instant beloved masterpiece, followed in 2024 by the gloriously witchy adventure, Agatha All Along. And now, the threads of those series continue in VisionQuest, a series which culminates an MCU streaming trilogy. After Wanda and Agatha each went on reality-warping metaphysical journeys in their respective series, this time it’s the turn of Paul Bettany’s Vision (in the all-white form he became at the end of WandaVision) to go on an existential odyssey, this time joined by none other than his sort-of-dad – and Avengers mega-baddie – James Spader’s Ultron. In keeping with the playful presentation and reality-breaking nature of WandaVision and Agatha, VisionQuest looks to be another psychedelic unravelling in MCU form, as Bettany’s Vision ponders the nature of his existence. Is he a normal guy, working in a pub? Or is he an android – reconstructed from a formerly-deceased prior model of himself – now trying to understand his own nature having been extricated from the fabricated reality he blissfully inhabited with Wanda Maximoff? Well, quite.
We see Vision entering a mansion that seems to be a digital projection of his own mind, in which also resides Spader’s Ultron – sometimes also assuming a human form, with a Hot Fuzz-worthy great big bushy beard – and James D’Arcy’s Jarvis, butler of Howard Stark (Tony’s dad), who proved the inspiration for Tony’s J.A.R.V.I.S operating system, which in part birthed Ultron. Still following? We also see Vision looking back on fond family ‘memories’ (or are they, since they were maybe not real?) from WandaVision. And, it seems, their son Tommy Maximoff is still out there somewhere, now a teenager played by Ruaridh Mollica – just as his brother Billy Maximoff, aka Wiccan, proved to be a significant figure in Agatha All Along, played by Joe Locke. “Free your soul, and save your son,” Ultron implored Vision.
In short, it looks like a real brain-teaser, continuing one of the more ambitious experiments from Marvel’s TV era – here’s hoping it lives up to the previous two shows. We’ll find out when VisionQuest comes to Disney+ from October 14.
