Steam Frame reviews praise its wireless PC streaming, but short battery life, weak passthrough and a $1,059 price limit its appeal.
    GR StaffEditorial Team19 September 2026

Valve’s Steam Frame has reached review sites, and the broad verdict is clear: its wireless PC streaming earns strong praise, while battery life, passthrough and price prompt more reservations. PC Gamer scored the headset 80 out of 100, Tom’s Hardware gave it four out of five, and Engadget awarded 6.5 out of 10. Road to VR published its review on September 16 without a numerical score.

The Steam Frame starts at $1,059 in the US for the 256GB model. Valve says its first purchase emails go out from September 18, with recipients receiving 72 hours to complete payment. Valve has not announced a delivery date for the US or Europe, leaving buyers with a key practical detail still unresolved.

Steam Frame is Valve’s SteamOS headset, designed around wireless streaming from a gaming PC. Its included 6GHz adapter handles the connection between the headset and PC, and this is the feature that receives the most consistent approval across the reviews. The headset can also run games on its Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, but reviewers describe standalone performance more cautiously because results depend on game optimization and the emulation needed for some software.

Valve includes a standalone version of Half-Life: Alyx with the headset. Its rear strap contains a 21.6 Wh battery, although Valve does not provide an official runtime estimate. That absence makes the reviewers’ testing especially important, and those tests point to markedly different results depending on how the headset is used.

    Critical Analysis – Strengths

The strongest case for Steam Frame is its PC streaming. PC Gamer’s Jacob Ridley reports a seamless, reliable connection to a gaming PC and says he did not encounter connection issues at home or in a busy office. Road to VR’s Scott Hayden finds the streamed image close enough to a dedicated tethered connection that average users may struggle to distinguish the two through latency or fidelity. Engadget’s Devindra Hardawar reports a stable stream of Control from a PC, while Tom’s Hardware’s Brandon Hill characterizes the streaming performance as excellent.

That agreement matters because Steam Frame’s wireless design is central to its appeal. The reviews present it as a headset that is at its best beside a capable gaming PC, where the PC rather than the headset’s mobile hardware can provide the game performance. For players who value untethered VR but still want access to PC games, the adapter appears to be the element that most consistently fulfills Valve’s promise.

Comfort also receives qualified praise. Road to VR finds the Frame somewhat more comfortable than Quest 3 without the optional top strap and substantially more comfortable with it attached. The top strap, however, is not included in the box; it is part of Valve’s $59 Ergonomic Accessories Kit. Engadget adds an important limitation, finding the headset noticeably less comfortable for people who wear glasses.

Standalone software is more mixed but not without positives. Road to VR says games run well on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 when developers have taken extra care to optimize their titles for Steam Frame, while Tom’s Hardware says emulation imposes a performance cost on standalone gaming. Engadget calls the standalone Half-Life: Alyx port noticeably less sharp than its PC counterpart but still regards it as a premium VR experience. The reviews therefore suggest that local play can be useful, although it is not the aspect of the hardware that inspires the same confidence as PC streaming.

    Battery Life and Passthrough

Battery life is the most repeated criticism, and the reported figures vary sharply by workload. Engadget measured around two hours for video and light gaming, dropping to just under 90 minutes in demanding games such as Half-Life: Alyx. Road to VR averaged between one and 1.5 hours of mixed use and compared that result with roughly two hours on its Quest 3. Tom’s Hardware recorded about an hour of standalone Alyx at 72Hz, but more than double that when streaming.

PC Gamer’s testing was particularly demanding: it lost half the battery in under 30 minutes while playing Eleven Table Tennis locally at 120Hz. The outlet also measured a 142-minute recharge from empty using Valve’s own adapter. Valve’s 45W power supply costs $29 separately rather than shipping in the box, adding another expense for buyers to consider.

Passthrough is another recurring compromise. Valve’s specifications list monochrome passthrough. Road to VR describes the view as greyscale and relatively low resolution, comparing it with the grainy view of Quest 2 while noting that it is not quite that poor. PC Gamer finds that the tracking cameras work well but render only a rough blue view of the room. These accounts make passthrough seem functional rather than a showcase feature.

Valve is working on a replacement strap that would include a hot-swappable battery and Index-style off-ear audio. Software engineer Jeremy Selan described the planned accessory to PC Gamer, while hardware engineer Joy Lyons said it would not be available at launch and that pricing and further details were still to come. Valve has not given a date or price for the strap.

    Verdict

The price is where the reviews diverge most in how heavily they weigh Steam Frame’s compromises. PC Gamer calls it the best all-round VR headset for user experience while identifying price as its major problem. Tom’s Hardware argues that the price will determine whether the Steam Frame succeeds or fails. Engadget directs most readers toward the $600 Quest 3 instead, and Road to VR positions Steam Frame as a product for power users willing to adjust settings in pursuit of the best result.

None of the reviews presents Steam Frame as inexpensive, and none dismisses its battery or passthrough limitations. Their shared conclusion is more specific: the headset is strongest when it is paired with a gaming PC and used with the included 6GHz wireless adapter. For buyers who already have that PC, can accept the $1,059 entry price and are prepared for additional accessory costs and limited standalone runtime, the reviews indicate that Steam Frame delivers impressive wireless streaming. Buyers seeking a lower-priced headset or longer standalone sessions have clearer reasons to look elsewhere.
