Former schoolteacher Jarvs Tasker has doubled her former annual income seven years after transitioning into the video game sector to establish her marketing company, Jarvs Indie Insights. Tasker shared her experience on Wednesday during an independent gaming showcase hosted by Game Anglia at the University of Suffolk in Ipswich. Tasker left teaching at age 28 in 2019 due to chronic illness before volunteering for PlayStation‘s YouTube channel, where she recognized transferable skills between classroom management and gaming community leadership. “I can comfortably say it probably would have taken me about 20 years in teaching to earn what I make now,” said Jarvs Tasker, founder of Jarvs Indie Insights.

Tasker highlighted the accessibility of the sector for second-career professionals and noted that young people often remain unaware of available career paths. She emphasized that authentic interest remains critical for industry acceptance.

“Managing a community is very similar to managing a class of kids, so there’s a lot of crossover skills there, but actually, video games is one of those industries where a lot of people come into it later on in life,” said Tasker. She observed that the industry continues to champion human effort over artificial intelligence due to strong player pushback.

“The video games community is very strong, and they will champion people that love what they do, but they’ll also notice if you’re in it just for the money,” Tasker stated. Tasker reiterated the necessity of genuine commitment within the community.

“Passion is the most important thing,” said Tasker. She praised current efforts to protect creative workers from AI integration. “I think as an industry we should be really proud of the fact that we’re still championing human creativity and that the audience is also on board with that,” Tasker added.

Regional organizers framed the regional showcase as evidence of the expanding economic footprint of gaming across the UK.

“It’s like being a content creator – it’s tricky to be one of the standout ones, but it is doable,” said Mark Backler, representative from Game Anglia. Local developers noted that student and professional developer clusters across Suffolk, Essex, Cambridgeshire, and Norfolk are driving growth in independent development. “Because of schemes like Game Anglia across Suffolk, Essex, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, there are really great clusters of a lot of students and a lot of developers, and I like to think that this has started to bring in studios who could make the big games,” said Sam Read-Graves, developer at Read Graves.

He noted that regional independent developers retain significant financial potential even without large-scale franchise studios.

“When it comes to those games like Call of Duty or FIFA, those at the minute aren’t going to come out of the East of England because we don’t have big studios,” Read-Graves explained. Read-Graves emphasized the commercial possibilities for regional creators.

“But when it comes to independent developers, there’s no reason those games can’t financially be as big,” said Read-Graves. Female leaders at the event highlighted improving demographic inclusion within technical roles like programming.

“It’s obviously daunting. When I studied, there were only about three women in my course,” said Abbygale Dunn, founder and director of Astral Forge. Dunn noted that industry workplaces are increasingly welcoming. “Everyone is so kind; it’s really not as bad as it seems, especially nowadays,” Dunn said.

She pointed to her personal experience in engineering roles.

“As a programmer myself, which is more rare for women to be in, I’ve never felt out of place,” added Dunn. Industry scouts highlighted market saturation as the primary hurdle for emerging development teams. “There are so many games out there right now, and it’s not like there aren’t enough good games; it’s how do you get visibility on those games?” said Omar Khalil, game scout lead at Entity.

Khalil identified discoverability as the primary barrier facing new developers.

“I think that’s the biggest challenge,” Khalil concluded.
