The Witcher 4 physical edition confirmed by CDPR, even if PS5 discs go away

CD Projekt Red has confirmed that The Witcher 4 will be getting a boxed edition, even if it releases after the announced cut-off for new PlayStation discs.

Earlier this year, Sony announced that it would be discontinuing physical media in new games released for PlayStation after January 2028.

The decision has been seen as incredibly controversial, with many critics pointing out that an all-digital PlayStation would mean buyers could only purchase new games at prices set on the PlayStation store.

Now, CD Projekt Red has confirmed that plans remain for The Witcher 4 to get a physical edition, even if the game releases after January 2028 when PlayStation discs are set to be discontinued.

“We don’t know what’s going to be the case,” said CDPR’s joint-CEO Michał Nowakowski in an interview with The Game Business.

“We know what PlayStation has announced. And we have no influence on the policies of the first parties. The discs for the first parties, including PlayStation, have to be manufactured in their own factories. So, if they stop manufacturing indeed by 2028, then yes [we won’t have a disc].”

However, Nowakowski continued that “we’re big fans of people having access to tangible collectible things. We’re nerds ourselves and we like that. We always supported that. So whatever is the case, we’re going to be for sure having a box.

“We’re going to have a box that’s going to have some feelies in it, something that’s going to be something you’re going to be wanting to open up and enjoy. But we have no influence actually on what is the case here.”

In any case, The Witcher 4 has confirmed that it will be released in 2028. Rumours previously pointed to 2027, which would have allowed CDPR to print physical discs for the game, but the upcoming release of The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past has instead filled this gap.

Before we get to The Witcher 4, new content is coming to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

The Witcher 4 was announced in 2022, with the first trailer debuting at The Game Awards 2024. A tech demo for the game was then revealed in June 2025.

CD Projekt Red also made a few announcements at Gamescom Opening Night Live last week. Debuting a new trailer for The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past, it also announced The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered, which brings a whole plethora of new content and upgrades to the 2015 game.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered includes enhanced visuals to textures, models, and other graphical features, as well as improved combat, better traversal and movement, and brand new content such as new witcher signs effects and monster behaviours.

There’s also a skill tree revamp, along with new finishers, expanded photo mode, and more accessibility options. It’ll be free for all owners of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and releases on September 29, 2026 for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
