Kevin Eastman hasn’t given up on seeing a film adaptation of The Last Ronin. The graphic novel, which depicts the last surviving Ninja Turtle in a post-apocalyptic future, was set to be adapted as a live-action R-rated film from Paramount Pictures. However, the film never left the development phase, and Paramount eventually shelved the idea, opting to do more kid-friendly Turtle projects.
Kevin Eastman, who co-created the Turtles and co-wrote The Last Ronin, is still confident that the movie will be made. Eastman took the idea a step further, suggesting the film could be animated, using the voice actors from the 1987 TMNT cartoon.
“It would be wonderful to have some of those original voices,” Kevin Eastman says during a TMNT reunion panel at Florida Supercon. “It would really be a wonderful crossover or throwback to all the things that we – even at the height of the Turtles comic it was 100,000 copies, but millions of people fell in love with the original cartoon series. It would be a wonderful tip of the hat to the original Turtles stories if we were lucky enough to do The Last Ronin movie and bring these guys back and do it up right.”
The 1987 cartoon voice actors, who were also at the panel, seemed into the idea. Considering how popular the original cartoon still is, this idea feels like a slam dunk. Let’s hope someone at Paramount is listening.
