Kelly Thompson and Hayden Sherman’s Absolute Wonder Woman has been going strong ever since it launched in 2024, but as it turns out, the DC Comics series was initially slated to have a different writer behind it altogether. And who was that creator? Writer-artist extraordinaire Zoe Thorogood of It’s Lonely at the Centre of the Earth.
Posting on Twitter, Thorogood shared, “[E]verytime I see panels from Absolute Wonder Woman and remember originally I was going to write it I shudder because that book was absolutely meant to be written by Kelly [Thompson].” She continued, “I dropped out of the project because I knew deep down I wasn’t the guy to write Wonder Woman ( well and my life was falling apart and my brother killed himself but that’s besides the point). But I think that. Idk. It would be cool to work more with DC, but I honestly think I’m just supposed to be an Absolute Weird Indie Guy.”
Thorogood concluded, “I just think it’s important to evaluate your strengths as a creator. I think Zoe Thorogood readers would like my take on Wonder Woman, but Wonder Woman readers wouldn’t. Does that make sense? Idk. I wasn’t confident in my ability to write her in the way she deserved to be written. I don’t think I’d even know how haha.”
As both a Zoe Thorogood reader and a Wonder Woman reader myself, that does make sense, even though I’d still love to see her take on Diana. From my own observations as a Wonder Woman fan online, there seems to be a cohort of fans with a very particular idea of who Diana is and who she should be, and the last thing I’d want for any creator is for them to compromise their creative vision because of that. I’ll always be excited to read a new Zoe Thorogood story, and if she only operates as an “Absolute Weird Indie Guy,” then that’s more than okay with me!
This isn’t the first time a creator has stepped away from an Absolute series with DC. Artist Rafael Albuquerque had to drop out of Absolute Superman after a natural disaster in Brazil swept through his city. Luckily, Albuquerque was safe and has since made his Absolute debut as the artist of Absolute Green Arrow
In the meantime, Thorogood has been working on a story (and accompanying album with Harley Poe!) called Vampire on Aisle 6 about a vampire trapped in a grocery store. She spoke to us about it at C2E2 2026, which you can check out here.
