The 80-song lineup spans superstars, rising talent, brand-new releases and even unreleased music, reflecting just how much the soundtrack has evolved alongside the game itself.
For years, music in video games simply filled the background. Think the original Super Mario Bros. (1985) video game soundtrack, which was composed by Koji Kondo for the Nintendo Famicom/NES. No words, just chiptune music. But the “Ground Theme” was so historic, so universally recognized, that it earned itself a spot in the Library of Congress.
Music in video games set the mood while players complete missions and explored virtual worlds. Today, that relationship has completely changed. Artists don’t just appear on game soundtracks anymore, they help define the experience and truly make it memorable.
For decades, Madden has quietly become an influential intersection of football, fashion and hip-hop culture. This impact became apparent when the video game series partnered with designer John Geiger for Madden NFL 21. This collaboration merged virtual gaming gear with real-life streetwear. Geiger became the first outside fashion designer to officially integrate physical footwear lines and branded apparel directly into the Madden NFL franchise.
In many ways, Madden became a low-key A&R pipeline. Players might spend hours on Superstar or The League mode and leave the game having discovered their next favorite rapper without ever opening Spotify. And that kind of discovery matters, because Black youth have always found new music through the spaces where their community naturally gather, barbershops, basketball courts, parties and virtual game lobbies.
As a child, I discovered countless pairs of Jordans on the basketball court with friends; games like Madden have become the digital version of those spaces and moments, introducing songs to millions of players through repetition and shared experiences. Before a Madden kickoff, players could customize their athlete, buy sneakers, put together outfits inspired by real streetwear and hear the latest hip-hop and R&B records, just while navigating menus. Those moments blurred the lines between sports, fashion, music and Black identity, creating an experience that felt bigger than football itself.
That’s why Black music has never just existed alongside gaming culture, it’s helped define it. Joe Budden’s breakout 2003 hit single “Pump It Up” peaked at No. 38 on the Billboard Hot 100 and served as the highest-charting solo song of his rap career and that track was on the The Madden NFL 2004 soundtrack. Kendrick Lamar’s song “N95” debuted and peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, and it was also featured on Madden NFL 23.Thats just two examples out of the many.
Hip-hop and R&B provide the energy that drives the experience, while each annual soundtrack captures what the genres sound like at that moment in time. Looking back at older Madden games is almost like flipping through a musical time capsule, with every installment preserving the sounds, artists and trends that defined its era.
This year’s soundtrack won’t just accompany games on the field, it has the potential to document another chapter in Black culture. For an entire generation of players, Madden has become one of the biggest places to discover music, celebrate style and experience the connection between sports and hip-hop in a way that feels authentic.
