“Come with us if you wanna live…!”
Issue 2 of ‘The Adequates’ had ended with the goths offering the protagonists – Grey, Chad, Randy, Julie, Pam, and Tweak – a lift while they’re being chased across the school by some mean bullies. By the end of the comic, the friends all gain some sort of supernatural abilities and Chad is practically flying in the air, not with Superman’s agility or anything, but more in the territory of awkwardly ‘floating’ a few feet above ground.
Created by Lee Loughridge and Marz Jr., Issue #3 of the comic-book series starts off with a flashback and the goths reveal they might’ve done something to cause the group to gain their new powers. Poor Chad thinks the Goths are probably going to torture them or something, but the goths actually want to help them. They take the squad back to the cemetery, to test a theory about their new powers and the dangers that might come with it.
Unfortunately, some officers are guarding the cemetery, deepening the mystery around the site, and the kids must find a way to distract them, so that they can learn more about their own predicament. It all seems to have something to do with the legendary monster Grey gives a presentation on in the first chapter.
I do feel like, in terms of plot, not a lot happens in this issue, but it’s pretty funny, especially since the scary-looking Goth kids actually care about what might be happening to their classmates. And while the extent of their abilities remains unclear, this issue specifically dives into redhead Pam’s powers.
The exaggerated artwork remains fun, even though it’s definitely the kind of style that won’t appeal to everybody. However, the comically elongated character foreheads and striking outfits, like the vibrant black punk looks worn by the Goth kids, complete with spiked collars, give the comic-book series a distinct visual appeal.
The Adequates is also on Kindle Unlimited.
