Batman has been animated before. A lot of different ways. From the gothic shadows of Batman: The Animated Series to the increasingly stylized worlds that followed with the Justice League and Batman: The Brave and the Bold. But Absolute Batman presents a different challenge. This version of Bruce Wayne doesn’t simply look different from the Batman audiences have known for decades. Everything about him is built around a different set of rules stemming from the Absolute Universe created by Darkseid. He has a brutal new costume, a totally flipped origin, and he plays by a different set of rules due to the world surrounding him.

That makes an animated adaptation both exciting and surprisingly dangerous. Animation could be the perfect medium for capturing the exaggerated art and energy that makes Absolute Batman stand apart from other versions of the character. There is absolutely a ton of pressure for the series to succeed. If the adaptation gets these three things right, it could turn one of DC’s strangest new takes on Batman into something that feels completely natural on screen.

    3) Absolute Batman’s Animation Needs to Capture Its Raw, Exaggerated Energy

The biggest opportunity is also the easiest thing to get wrong. Absolute Batman has a visual identity that practically begs to be animated. It’s already been discussed how the creators are huge fans of manga and anime. The writer has also expressed interest in having Studio Trigger animate the series, which is known for producing Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. That animation style perfectly suits Absolute Batman’s exaggerated proportions, imposing silhouette, and rougher physicality. A 2D approach could preserve that hand-drawn sense of movement and exaggeration, allowing every punch, leap, and shadow to feel slightly larger than life. CGI could work too, but only if it embraces the same stylized philosophy rather than smoothing everything into generic superhero animation. There has been a lot of progress with CGI techniques used in both American animation and Japanese animation, but there’s still an aesthetic difference between the two that can’t quite replicate the beauty of traditional 2D animation.

That’s particularly important because Absolute Batman already has an established visual language—and it’s in 2D on paper. That doesn’t mean it can’t be in CGI, but it means that it could better match the panels of the comic book while moving outside of its borders. The new series also doesn’t need to compete by looking more polished like a Pixar movie. It needs to look raw and organic like the comic art that fans are enamored with. This also matters a lot when it comes to Absolute Batman’s villains.

If Bruce is supposed to feel like a force of nature when he puts on the mask, the animation needs to make that physical transformation exaggerated, textured, and gritty. Bringing back that rough sketchiness that’s disappeared from older anime like the 1997 Berserk series would be incredible. Every frame should reinforce the idea that this isn’t another version of the Batman audiences already know. It’s a Batman who has been rebuilt from the ground up in a much scarier world.

    2) TheAbsolute Batman Animated Series Needs to Embrace Its Biggest Mysteries

One of the most intriguing and frustrating aspects of Absolute Batman is how much remains uncertain. The series has already reimagined major pieces of Bruce’s life, leaving audiences with questions about his world, his relationships, and the circumstances that will eventually shape him into Batman. An adaptation shouldn’t rush to answer every mystery simply because television traditionally wants clean explanations. Some of these unanswered questions are exactly what give the story its momentum. The world of Absolute Batman also needs to be fully realized and immersive. Make Gotham its own character instead of just the setting.

For the most part, the series should for sure be a faithful adaptation of the comics. But if the creator is willing, the series could also expand on more story elements. Fans have already voiced their interest in seeing more flashbacks with the Crime Alley Kids. Maybe show a little more Matches? It would be great to see more flashback scenes that deepen Bruce’s relationships with Edward “Eddie” Nigma, Oswald “Ozzie” Cobblepot, Harvey Dent, and Selina Kyle, especially since the comic has already done such a great job of building his bond with Waylon. Future issues might delve into it, but seeing them tackle some challenges together as kids can’t be a bad thing.

The conclusion to the first comic could also benefit from more elaboration. The climax felt rushed, so maybe the series can go into further detail about Batman making his way to Black Mask’s yacht, as well as the aftermath. It’s safe to say that the fight will be brutal, especially if the series turns it into an MMA-style duel.

    1) Absolute Batman Can’t Lose the Humanity Behind the Mask

The comic has been plowing forward, arc after arc, showing Batman take on Bane, Freeze, Poison Ivy, and now Scarecrow and the Robins. So much so that it almost feels like it’s forgotten about Bruce. The biggest thing the animated series can’t afford to lose is Bruce Wayne himself. The danger of such a radically redesigned Batman is that the mask can become more interesting than the man wearing it. The series needs to explore the quieter moments that reveal why Bruce keeps going, what he wants, what he fears, and how his relationships affect the person he becomes. The brutality and spectacle are part of the appeal, but they only matter if there is someone underneath them worth caring about.

There needs to come a point when Bruce can just be Bruce. He can’t wear the mask 24/7—he can, but he needs to interact with normal people from time to time. It makes sense that this Bruce Wayne is trying to distance himself from others as much as possible, but this can also create an isolated character that becomes extremely one-dimensional. There’s a lot to work with in this regard. It’s not hard to imagine how difficult it must’ve been for Martha, a single mom, to raise Bruce, not to mention the struggles Bruce himself faced as a kid who lost his father. There’s a lot about Bruce’s development that was affected by growing up without his dad, and that deserves to be shared with fans.

At the end of the day, this is still Bruce Wayne putting on the cowl and becoming Batman. Seeing that transformation brought to life with fluid 2D animation, exaggerated action, and the kind of visual intensity usually reserved for anime could be something genuinely special. If the series can capture the soul of the comic while letting Batman finally move beyond the page, then the Absolute Universe may feel less like an alternate world—and more like a world we’ve actually stepped into.
