Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick backs game streaming, says it will help fix hardware prices

TL;DR: Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick argues game streaming will broaden the install base and solve high console and PC hardware costs within three years by enabling AAA play on phones, tablets, or basic laptops, but current latency, licensing, controller preferences, data-center limits, and rising memory prices make that timeline unlikely.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has a pretty optimistic take on the industry’s hardware pricing problem. However, the gaming world has been skeptical of his solution for years. His idea? More game streaming.

During Take-Two’s latest earnings call, which was mostly about how well GTA 6 is expected to perform, Zelnick also fielded a question about rising console and PC hardware costs. He admitted the price hikes aren’t great for the industry, since fewer working machines means fewer potential customers. He doesn’t think it will matter much longer, though, because he’s betting on streaming to widen the install base.

“Machines that weren’t game machines before will become game machines.”

Zelnick also said he expects low-latency streaming to become commerciallyIf a phone, tablet, or basic laptop can stream a AAA game without lag, you no longer need a $600 PS5 or a gaming PC stacked with pricey memory to play the biggest titles. Apparently, that alone could multiply the effective install base several times over

Right now, streaming is nowhere close to that vision. Latency, licensing headaches, and a strong consumer preference for physical controllers and TVs have kept services like Xbox Cloud Gaming and GeForce Now as side offerings rather than replacements for owning hardware. It’s telling that even GTA 6, Take-Two’s biggest release ever, is launching as a console exclusive with no PC version at all, let alone a day-one streaming option.

The ideal version of what Zelnick describes looks like this: a stream on virtually any screen, input lag indistinguishable from local hardware, and pricing that undercuts buying a $600 console outright. We’re probably still a fair distance from that. Cloud gaming today works decently on strong home Wi-Fi, but tends to fall apart on mobile data or in regions without nearby data center coverage.

I also think Zelnick’s three-year timeline is wildly optimistic. Streaming has been just around the corner for over a decade now, and the underlying problem driving hardware prices, the ongoing memory shortage that’s made basic RAM kits cost more than a PS5, isn’t something streaming servers are immune to either. Data centers still need memory and compute, and that demand is only growing.

How does Zelnick say streaming could expand the effective install base compared to current console and PC ownership?

What technical and practical barriers does the article cite that currently prevent cloud gaming from replacing local hardware?

Which major Take-Two release is mentioned as launching as a console exclusive with no day-one streaming or PC version?

How does current cloud gaming performance vary by network conditions and regional data center availability, according to the article?

Zelnick is right that streaming could eventually ease the pressure on consumers who can’t afford new hardware. It just doesn’t look like a fix that’s arriving within three years, especially while memory prices keep climbing and console makers keep passing the cost down. It’s an optimistic take, but it doesn’t seem to be realistic right now.
