The 9 Best Movies and TV Shows to Watch This Weekend

Summer is at its peak and the air is hot with dragon fire, sex, and death — on our screens, anyway. This week’s run of shows and movies include a grisly House of the Dragon finale, an exciting new horror from Jane Schoenbrun, a rom-com with a devious catch, and the return of Ted Lasso.

Director Jane Schoenbrun follows up their atmospheric horror I Saw the TV Glow with this goofier, bloodier, and more heartwarming slasher. Hannah Einbinder stars as Kris, a queer up-and-coming filmmaker tasked with reviving an old slasher franchise to include a social-justice spin. While mulling over ideas, Kris decides to visit the franchise’s original final girl, the reclusive Billie (played mesmerizingly by Gillian Anderson, complete with a southern accent).

➽ Our take out of Cannes? “Absolute banger.”

In late 2024, the Colombian adaptation of Gabriel García Márquez’s novel premiered with eight densely layered, beautifully shot episodes. The final batch continues to focus on the generations of the Buendía family living amid political infighting in Macondo while building up to the magical-realist masterpiece’s tragic end

You could otherwise bill it as “The Sex Purge,” “The Urge,” or “One Lay Only” … Will Gluck’s twisted rom-com has already brought an abundance of laughs as the informed tell the uninformed what the hell One Night Only really is. This is a rom-com, yes, but one in which Monica Barbaro’s Allie and Callum Turner’s Owen live in a world where premarital sex is only allowed one night a year.

Novelist Bret Easton Ellis returned to his scummy ’80s roots with 2023’s fictionalized memoir that dipped into slasher-horror territory. If you’ve read any Ellis, you know the setup: A group of rich and privileged high-schoolers tumble into sex, drugs, and violence. In Ryan Murphy’s adaptation, Igby Rigney plays Ellis alongside nepo babies Homer Gere and Kaia Gerber

The first run of this show ended up wearing out its welcome, but maybe enough time has passed for a revival. Here, Jason Sudeikis’s improbably nice soccer coach is in charge of a women’s team; most of the cast is returning

This Alex Cooper–produced series is built around Harry Jowsey, who has already burned through Perfect Matchand Too Hot to Handle. No relation to I Wanna Marry ‘Harry,’ the notorious 2014 Joe Millionaire-alike in which women were fooled into thinking they were competing for Prince Harry’s affections

This has been the best season of the show by far — so much so that it’s a bummer that it’s already ending. You messy Targaryens, we’ll miss you.

What caused James Cameron to go soft on the Avatar movies? Was it Fire and Ashnot hitting $2 billion or a sudden realization that he could do stuff without Na’vi? Here’s one for everyone who still can’t shut up about The Odyssey.
