Shanaya Kapoor leads a new series that swaps the original franchise’s gloss for ambition, secrets and tangled relationships.
The Student of the Year universe is getting a makeover. The trailer for Student of the Year: After Dark shows a darker, more intense take on campus life, replacing the glamour and youthful romance of the original with intrigue and interpersonal conflict.
Shanaya Kapoor stars in the series, which marks a change of tone for a franchise known for stylish colleges, aspirational lifestyles and romantic drama. The trailer points to a story where relationships, social hierarchies and personal ambitions collide.
Shanaya Kapoor in a different world
Kapoor takes centre stage in a setting far from the polished college universe viewers know. The trailer hints at secrets, emotional tension and the pressure of a competitive social environment, with more weight on the consequences of personal choices than on romance alone.
The project gives Kapoor a chance to show a different screen persona inside a familiar property, as the franchise moves towards more mature, suspense-driven storytelling.
From glossy romance to darker drama
The original film was known for its glossy visuals, big musical sequences, fashionable characters and romantic rivalries, which gave it a distinctive place in mainstream Hindi cinema.
After Dark appears to break from that formula. The trailer builds an atmospheric world where tension and uncertainty come before light-hearted campus romance. The shift reflects a wider trend of established properties being reimagined for audiences who want layered characters, mystery and more complex stories. Keeping the campus setting while changing the storytelling approach could give the brand a new dimension.
The trailer offers glimpses of shifting relationships, concealed truths and the pursuit of status, suggesting the characters face problems that go beyond ordinary college rivalries. It sets the mood and visual direction, but most plot details remain under wraps. How far the story departs from the franchise’s themes will become clearer as more information is released.
Can the franchise reinvent itself?
A darker approach can bring a familiar franchise new viewers, but it must deliver a story that justifies the change. The key question is whether familiar branding combined with more intense storytelling can give After Dark an identity of its own.
With Kapoor leading, the series is likely to draw viewers curious about how the franchise evolves. The trailer promises a campus drama where the glamour may hide a far more complicated reality.
