Step into September With These New Graphic Novels

Well, friends, we have turned another page of the calendar, and you know what that means: it’s time to revel in a new set of freshly released graphic novels! Here, you’ll find plenty of books for younger readers who need a break from schoolwork, stories featuring characters you already know and love, and even books about historical periods you might not know much about. So, pull up a chair and don’t worry: these books will not be on a test, so all you need to do is enjoy them!

Absent by Rex Ogle and LJ Baptiste (Sep 1)

This mixed-format novel tells the story of three boys — Manny, Liam, and Calvin — who end up in detention for missing school. Each of them has a different reason for skipping class, and each tells his story in a different format (Calvin’s sections are told through comics, for example). Together, the trio may finally come to understand what school — and friendship — have to offer.

On Their Frontlines Volume One by Marina Lisa Komiya (Sep 1)

Before the war, Yoriko and Haru were the best of friends, and possibly more. But in the tumultuous aftermath, the girls become separated and, unable to find each other, are forced into lives they never expected or wanted. Often dark but never hopeless, On Their Frontlines follows Yoriko and Haru as they try to forget each other and rebuild as best they can.

Santat’s series of adventures about a fish boy named Sashimi continues with this second installment! Sashimi’s attempt to go on a school field trip quickly goes awry, and he ends up getting separated from his class. How will he find his way home?
