New spine-chilling artwork offers a gritty take on Marvel’s Spider-Man ahead of its upcoming horror series. Comic artist Marco Mastrazzo has unveiled the variant cover art for Midnight Spider-Man #1.
Mastrazzo shared his work on Instagram, teasing a sinister new take on the beloved web-slinging hero. The illustration leans hard into body horror, showing Spider-Man with exposed muscles, a distorted mask, and spider-like features covering his body.
This piece offers an early glimpse into the Midnight Universe, a new imprint launching three titles this fall. The forthcoming series reimagines classic heroes through a darker lens.
What to know about Midnight Spider-Man’s horror-focused comic series
The new superhero horror series comes from writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson and artist ScieTronc. It reimagines Peter Parker through a sci-fi body-horror story that changes his familiar origin.
Instead of being bitten by a radioactive spider, a young Peter Parker becomes a test subject in Oscorp’s ruthless experiments to unlock eternal life. The experiment transforms Parker into a grotesque human-spider hybrid. He must eventually embrace his new form to fight those responsible. Readers can also expect appearances from familiar characters, including Doctor Octopus and Black Cat.
Speaking about this new take on Spider-Man, writer Johnson said he approached the series through a body-horror lens. He compared it to the work of David Cronenberg and John Carpenter. ScieTronc’s artwork also draws inspiration from manga, Japanese horror, and Korean manhwa. Peter even reads an original manga within the story that shapes his choices throughout the run.
Midnight: Spider-Man #1 is one of the first three titles under Marvel’s Midnight imprint. The first issue is scheduled to arrive on October 7, 2026, alongside Midnight Fantastic Four #1 and Midnight X-Men #1.
The second issue of Midnight Spider-Man is scheduled for November 18, 2026
