Rather than chasing another multiversal spectacle, the latest chapter gives Peter Parker something far more difficult to fight – himself. The result is a refreshingly grounded superhero film that mixes emotion, humour, mystery and action without losing sight of what makes Spider-Man such an enduring character.
Set after the events of No Way Home, Peter (Tom Holland) is now living with the consequences of Doctor Strange’s spell. He’s older, more isolated and trying to build a life where almost no one remembers who he is. Instead of relying on Avengers-level threats, the film brings Spider-Man back to neighbourhood crime-fighting, giving fans shades of Sam Raimi’s original Spider-Man trilogy while introducing a more mature version of Tom Holland’s hero.
One of the film’s biggest talking points is the arrival of a much darker Spider-Man. The only aspect that feels slightly underwhelming is the post-credit scene, which keeps its cards close to its chest instead of delivering a massive reveal. Still, the closing tease that “Spider-Man will return” is enough to spark plenty of theories about what comes next.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day isn’t trying to be the biggest Spider-Man movie; it wants to be the most personal. And by embracing Peter Parker’s emotional struggles alongside thrilling action, heartfelt humour and an intriguing darker side, it may just become Tom Holland’s best Spider-Man film yet.
