‘South Park’ is back for its 29th season, and in its premiere episode, it paid tribute to one of the great masterpieces of Japanese animation. It’s a moment that many viewers may not have connected to ‘Akira,’ but Katsuhiro Otomo’s creation was featured in the premiere of the series created by Matt Stone and Trey Parker.
The series’ creators have repeatedly expressed their passion for ‘Akira,’ and this time it goes far beyond the most iconic scenes and moments from one of the most influential manga and animated films in history. The episode in question shows us how all the kids in town get electric bikes and start wreaking havoc everywhere. In one scene, we see Cartmancrashing into a restaurant’s window and plowing into a diner. It’s a recreation of a scene from ‘Akira,’ to which the series also paid homage in episode 12 of season 2, when Cartman himself transforms into a biomechanical monster in the style of Tetsuo Shima.

The 29th season of ‘South Park’ has kicked off in style with an intriguing title change—the series is now called ‘South America’—thus continuing its tradition of jokes centered on satirizing Donald Trump. In addition, Kenny’s customary death has returned, a staple of the early seasons in which the character met gruesome ends in the vast majority of episodes.
