Sony shut down Overdrive, the fake PlayStation Store for pirated PS5 games, but clones appeared within hours

TL;DR: Overdrive, the unofficial PS5 storefront that went viral over the weekend for offering pirated PlayStation games, has reportedly been shut down by its developer after receiving a legal notice from Sony (not that he should have expected any different). While it was online, it built up a catalog of more than 1,600 free PS4 and PS5 games for jailbroken PS5 consoles, pulling AAA and indie titles directly from third-party file-hosting platforms.

The Overdrive “project” was released on GitHub on October 9, but it only took off after Edigax, a well-known PS5 modder and jailbreak tutorial creator, posted about it on social media two days later. The post racked up nearly 10 million views and drew more than 600 comments, bringing a flood of attention to Overdrive.

A couple of days later, Sony’s legal team reportedly sent a cease-and-desist notice to the Overdrive developer, forcing them to shut it down without warning. Neither the developer nor Sony has publicly confirmed the legal notice, but the original GitHub project appears to have been removed for good.

Within hours of Overdrive going dark, several forks and cloned repositories appeared online, reinstating multiple versions of the store under new hosts. At least two GitHub repositories cropped up in less than a day, with at least one already expanded to more than 1,800 titles.

Like the original, the forks don’t host any pirated content but use the same client-side code to map out external server databases. Their maintainers are also reportedly merging Overdrive’s styling into existing homebrew projects like Omega Dashboard PS5 and PS5-Suite, which integrate custom game stores with file managers and hardware tools.

Many of those who embraced Overdrive and have since moved on to the forks seem critical of Sony’s plan to stop releasing new PS5 games on physical media starting in 2028, saying the company is getting exactly what it deserves.

Overdrive’s popularity can be attributed to several factors, including a slick, familiar interface that mimicked the official PlayStation Store layout to a tee. The actual experience, however, seems to have been mixed, with early adopters noting that many of the links pulled from file hosts were either broken or offered terrible download speeds.

Reportedly created with Claude, Overdrive runs on consoles jailbroken with Relapse, an exploit chain that pairs a WebKit browser bug with a kernel flaw and allows homebrew execution on PS5 and PS5 Pro consoles running firmware 7.00 through 13.60. Sony has closed the security hole in firmware 14.00 already.
