The comic book series Something Is Killing the Children from creator James Tynion IV isn’t just one of the more evocative titles out there, it’s also one with a dense lore that’s ripe with potential for an adaptation. The problem, though, is finding a way to translate what makes the book so special into another medium, which is why various attempts at such expansions so difficult.
One of the more notable attempts started at Netflix back in 2021, which had Mike Flanagan involved. Even with the creator of The Haunting of Hill Houseattached, that project stagnated, which allowed Tynion the opportunity to build out the world of his books even more. Last year, Blumhouseconfirmed it was stepping in to adapt the project, both as a live-action movie and as an adult animated series.
“What I can say about Blumhouse … is they are not afraid of stories that put children in peril,” Tynion recently shared with <a href="https://comicvibe.com/itw-universe-rolls-out-ai-powered-media-planning-tool-for-sports-and-entertainment/” title=”ITW Universe rolls out AI-powered media planning tool for sports and entertainment”>Entertainment Weekly. “This time around, I am much more directly involved in the development as it makes the jump into other media, in ways that I can’t fully say yet.”
He added, “Jason Blum himself has been a huge advocate of the series, and I know he feels the potential for what this could be beyond a comic, beyond a novel, beyond all of this. I think Erica Slaughter is a character who has the potential to resonate with people all over the world. She already has in publishing, and I am thrilled that we’re going to have the potential to see her come to life in a whole bunch of different ways.”
Blumhouse could prove to be the perfect partner for Tynion, given that they managed to adapt the lucrative Five Nights at Freddy’s franchise into two live-action movies. On the other hand, Blumhouse has been working on making a live-action Spawnmovie for years, with that project languishing in purgatory.
However long a movie or TV series takes, it sounds like these are just the tip of the iceberg, as Tynion notes, “There’s so much more cooking in the Slaughterverse beyond all of that.”
The creator also explained how the delays in the TV series at Netflix ultimately strengthened the mythology of the series.
“We did these series of one-shots — Book of Slaughter, Book of Butcher, Book of Cutter— that laid out a lot of mythology of the series,” Tynion recalled. “Part of the reason I did that is because I was sitting in the first iteration of a writers’ room for SIKTC and realizing that anything I didn’t have nailed down, they were gonna come up with their own answers for. It was before the Archer’s Peakstory had even finished, so there was a lot that hadn’t been nailed down yet.”
Stay tuned for updates on the future of the Something Is Killing the Children franchise.
