2026 is only halfway over, but even so, many Shonen Jump series are being cancelled sooner than expected. Launched in 2014, Shueisha’s official manga platform, Shonen Jump+, has been serializing original Shonen series alongside catering to other manga demographics, including Seinen. It’s one of the biggest manga platforms as of now, with several globally renowned series under its belt, such as Dandadan, Kaiju No.8, Spy x Family, and many more. Since there are countless manga for readers to choose from, several manga don’t get the attention they deserve. Unfortunately, series that don’t perform well are often discontinued abruptly, reaching an anticlimactic conclusion.

While Shueisha almost never officially declares a manga is getting axed, it’s easy to notice the reason when a story reaches an anticlimactic conclusion in just a few chapters after it begins serialization. Just last year, the platform concluded several dozen series, and it’s evident that 2026 has been following the same pattern.
Shonen Jump+ Is Ending More Series in July

A famous account on X, @WSJ_manga, keeps sharing all kinds of updates on Shonen Jumpseries, which also includes when a manga is ending. According to several posts from the account, Shonen Jump+ has already cancelled four series this month. This also includes the acclaimed The Urban Legend Files, a supernatural horror-comedy manga written and illustrated by Kazuki Hiraoka. The story focuses on Mokume, a first-year college student with a passion for occult stories and legends. The series is episodic in nature, as it tackles Japanese folklore and urban legends, leaning much heavier into humor rather than mysteries or psychological horror.
The same X handle confirmed three more cancellations. The God Before Me by Shou Kunoda reached its conclusion on July 12th, 2026, three years after its debut. However, the manga only released 53 chapters as it follows Odachi, a passionate shohi player. Additionally, Money Forest by Kyohei Tawara will be ending on July 19th, 2026. It’s a fantasy series focusing on Rhodri, an elf who arrives at the elven forest, only to discover it’s been overrun by elf-hunting humans.
Finally, Magical Girl and Narco Wars will reach their conclusion on July 21st, 2026. This gore action series handles sensitive themes as it subverts the traditional magical girl genre by blending cute aesthetics with a gritty crime thriller. All these series are available on the official Manga Plus app
Why Does Shonen Jump Abruptly Cancel Manga?

The primary reason behind such cancellations is often low popularity, since the publishing company faces certain damage if it continues serializing a manga with no scope of catching the reader’s eye. With the digitalization of manga series on a globally accessible scale, the competition keeps getting more intense every year.
In WeeklyShonen Jump‘s case, the magazine has limited slots, which need to be cleared up for other upcoming series that might have more chances of being successful. Even famous series such as Jujutsu Kaisen and Demon Slayer don’t even manage to hit the 300-chapter milestone and conclude the story with steady progress, and a lot of factors play out in this.
Unlike the golden era of shonen manga like the 1990s and 2000s, where series like One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, etc. were allowed time to develop the story naturally, modern manga are pitched with a clear idea of an ending in mind. Reader preferences have changed over the decades as well, with many new manga enthusiasts preferring to read several fast-paced and short stories instead of spending months on longer and slow-burning Shonen.
