From ‘The Five-Star Weekend’ to ‘Moana’

Yes, there are a lot of streaming services, and, yes, there’s a lot of buzz around the latest releases. But just because something’s trending or on lists of most-viewed titles doesn’t mean it’s always worth a watch

The month of June delivered a ton of great new content (even if one of my favorites did get canceled). And now, July 2026 is here with even more solid streaming offerings

Allow me, an entertainment editor, to help you parse through it all with shows and movies that are actually worth watching this week. I’m talking buzzy movies like the live-actionMoana, star-studded new shows like The Five Star Weekendand the return of competitions shows like Project Runway and Big Brother. Enjoy the best selections (recommended by yours truly) on Netflix, Prime Video, in theaters and more

From Little House on the Prairie to The Westies, here’s what to watch this weekend

    • Rating: TV-MA
    • Number of seasons: 1

Five stars—Jennifer Garner, Regina Hall, Gemma Chan, D’Arcy Carden and Chloë Sevigny—star in The Five Star Weekend, and this is by far the show I’m most excited to watch this week. Garner plays a grieving widow who gathers four friends from different parts of her life for a weekend getaway. Drama, twists and a whole lot of emotional growth ensue

    • Rating: PG
    • Runtime: 115 minutes

Though I’m not sure we needed a live-action version of Moana this fast (it’s only been 10 years since the OG), I’m still excited to see Dwayne Johnson and his ridiculous wig sing “You’re Welcome.” And since the film cost a reported $250 million to make (oof!), let’s just hope this fan-favorite musical still has (sea) legs

    • Number of seasons: 1

The classic TV show is getting the Netflix reboot treatment, but the core story still revolves around the Ingalls family living in the midwest near the end of the 19th Century. Luke Bracey (who you may recognize from such “hits” as The Holidate) steps into the role originally made famous by Michael Landon back in the ’70s

    watch on netflix

    • Rating: TV-14
    • Number of seasons:22

Heidi, Nina and Christian are back, along with Law Roach and…um…Tyra Banks? (No comment.) The latest season offers a heavy helping of fashion and a star-studded roster of celeb judges like Ice Spice, Niecy Nash and Ciara. Let’s just hope Tyra doesn’t tell any of the contestants she was “rooting” for them

    watch on freeform or hulu

    • Rating: TV-MA
    • Number of seasons: 1

J.K. Simmons stars in this crime drama about a violent Irish gang in 1980s NYC. The gritty new series delivers plenty of bodies, mob clashes and, of course, FBI investigations. The fact that it centers around my home neighborhood of Hell’s Kitchen is just icing on the cake

    watch on MGM+

    • Rating: TV-14
    • Number of seasons: 28

Julie Chen Moonves returns for another season of the hit series that debuted a whopping 28 years ago. There is a whole new slew of housemates, including a former cast member of RuPaul’s Drag Race, an MMA fighter and a literal rocket scientist. I guess I know what my summer plans will be

    watch on CBS or paramount+

    • Rating: TV-14
    • Runtime: 87 minutes

Anyone else remember this wild and tragic luxury shipwreck from 2012? This new documentary tells the terrifying story—complete with survivor interviews and never-before-seen footage—of the sinking ship that captivated the world and sadly took the lives of 27 passengers and five crew members

    watch on netflix

    • Rating: TV-PG
    • Runtime:88 minutes

Is this the deepest piece of content on the list? Hardly. But I do love me some Jesse Metcalfe, especially in a lighthearted rom-com. A single dad and a single mom meet up at a kids’ camp and, you guessed it, summer sparks fly

    watch on roku

    9. I’m Not Afraid

    • Rating: TV-MA
    • Number of seasons: 1

In this intense Mexican drama, a 10-year-old boy discovers a kidnapped child chained up in a hidden hole in the woods. What ensues not only robs him of his childhood innocence, but it brings into question the motives of every single person he knows

    watch on netflix

    10. The Man Will Burn

    • Rating: TV-MA
    • Number of seasons:1

Do I want to live in a makeshift city in the middle of the desert with thousands of strangers? I do not. Will I watch a docuseries about it though? Absolutely. This new HBO doc follows the organizers of Burning Man, the now-iconic annual festival that brings together 80,000 Burners in middle-of-nowhere Nevada

    watch on hbo

    • Rating: R
    • Runtime: 108 minutes

This Stephen King adaptation hit theaters last year, but has finally arrived on streaming. Each year, 50 boys make the long walk where they are required to keep their pace above 3 MPH. If they fall below that, they face execution. The last boy walking wins a boatload of cash. Color me intrigued

    watch on hbo

    • Rating: TV-MA
    • Number of seasons: 1

If this horrifying docuseries sounds familiar, it’s probably because it comes on the heels of Netflix’s hit show Worst Roommate Ever. This version focuses on, you guessed it, the most terrible neighbors imaginable. Think fraud, violence and an unhealthy dose of neighborly payback

    watch on netflix

    • Rating: TV-MA
    • Number of seasons: 6

Season six of this psychological crime drama-thriller comes from the mind of movie and TV hitmaker Tyler Perry. A woman named Ruth (get it? Ruthless?!) gets wrapped up in a religious cult, but freeing herself and her daughter is much more difficult and dangerous than she ever imagined

    watch on paramount+

    • Rating: TV-MA
    • Number of seasons: 3

Season one of Silo rocked my world when it first hit Apple TV back in 2023. It was twist-filled, it was superbly acted and it wasn’t afraid to write off our favorite characters. Now, the apocalyptic sci-fi series about an underground bunker (or silo) is back for season three, with the incredible Rebecca Ferguson still at the helm

    watch on apple tv

    15. Elle

    • Rating: TV-14
    • Number of seasons: 1

One of the most highly anticipated shows of the year has finally arrived—the Legally Blonde prequel series starring Lexi Minetree in the title role. In a fun “fish-out-of-water” twist (kinda like the OG film), Elle is forced out of her comfort zone when she moves from pink and sunny Bel-Air to…Seattle?! Expectations for this one are high, but the first episode alone has me bending and snapping

    watch on prime video
