The rogue AI that helped define a generation of PC game design is coming to virtual reality — and the studio bringing her there started life as a group of modders prying games open without permission. Flat2VR Studios announced System Shock VR, an official VR adaptation of Nightdive Studios’ acclaimed 2023 remake, at the VR Games Showcase on August 13. The game will support Meta Quest, PlayStation VR2, and SteamVR — and can be wishlisted now on all three platforms. No release date has been set.

The announcement arrived as the closing reveal of a 29-game showcase, precisely the slot reserved for the title a producer wants audiences to remember. Nightdive’s 2023 remake earned an 80% score from PC Gamer and the outlet’s Best Remake of the Year award after a seven-year development cycle marked by engine changes, financial near-collapses, and scope resets. Three years after that release, a VR version of the game exists — and for the first time, it is being built by people who are licensed, funded, and practiced at exactly this kind of work.

Who Is Flat2VR Studios, and Why Does It Matter?

Flat2VR Studios did not start as a studio. It started as a modding community — a loose scene of developers prying open flatscreen games and forcing them into headsets because no publisher was ever going to authorize it. A System Shock VR mod came out of that community. Not a licensed product. Not a funded project. Just people who wanted to play it that way, and built the tools to do so.

In 2024, the community became a company. Flat2VR Studios was founded by members of the original modding group as a subsidiary of Impact Reality, a VR-focused marketing and PR firm. The new studio secured $750,000 in seed funding from Andreessen Horowitz’s A16Z Games SPEEDRUN 3 program and additional backing from Hartmann Capital. The business model it built is structurally unlike any prior VR game developer: instead of making original VR-native games and hoping to sell them to a small headset audience, Flat2VR licenses existing flatscreen games with proven audiences and converts them — bringing the VR experience to an existing fan base rather than waiting for that fan base to grow.

Since 2024, the studio has shipped Trombone Champ: Unflattened, Roboquest VR, Wrath: Aeon of Ruin VR, and FlatOut 4: Total Insanity VR. It delayed the Quest port of Roboquest VR to July 23 rather than ship it rough — a call that VR specialist publication VR.org described as correct. Its Half-Life 2 VR work achieved Steam Frame Verified in August 2026, while Valve’s own showcase app for the same headset did not clear verification. The studio has been quietly building a reputation for not embarrassing the games it touches.

System Shock VR is the highest-profile franchise it has yet been handed the keys to.

What System Shock VR Is: Story, Setting, and What It Asks of You

System Shock is a 1994 first-person immersive sim from Looking Glass Technologies. It is one of the founding texts of a design philosophy that emphasizes player agency, environmental physics, and emergent problem-solving over scripted encounters — the same philosophy that went on to shape Deus Ex, BioShock, Dishonored, and Prey.

The 2023 remake by Nightdive Studios rebuilt the game from scratch in Unreal Engine 4, modernizing its art and interface while preserving its underlying architecture. The story has not changed: you are a hacker who struck a deal with TriOptimum Corporation executive Edward Diego — remove the ethical constraints from Citadel Station’s artificial intelligence, SHODAN, and receive your freedom and an experimental neural implant. Six months later, you awaken aboard Citadel Station to the consequences. SHODAN controls everything. The crew are dead, converted into cyborgs, or mutated into something worse. Security machines patrol the corridors. Earth is in her sights.

Getting out means working through the station deck by deck — through medical bays and research laboratories, maintenance tunnels and biological groves and executive suites — destroying SHODAN’s surveillance cameras to reduce her security response, solving circuit puzzles, managing your inventory of weapons and hardware, and entering Cyberspace: first-person sequences where the hacker jacks directly into the station’s digital architecture and battles hostile programs to manipulate the physical world from within the network itself.

The emotional register is claustrophobic cyberpunk horror. SHODAN is not a boss waiting at the end of the game. She watches through the station’s cameras, speaks through its intercom systems, and commands the machines already surrounding you. The paranoia is architectural: the environment itself is her weapon, and she has been using it since before you woke up.

Why Immersive Sims and VR Are a Particularly Good Fit

VR’s promise has always been presence — the sensation of actually being inside a space rather than observing it through a screen. Most VR games approximate this through movement and spectacle. Immersive sims approximate it through physics, object persistence, and environmental consequence. When both are combined, the result is something that neither format can produce alone.

In System Shock VR, reading a keypad code from a corpse means reading it with your eyes and either remembering it or filming it with a device in your virtual hand. Walking to the keypad means moving through the corridor physically. Typing the code means pressing the keys with your tracked controllers. Leaning your head around a corner to check whether the mutant is still there means actually leaning your head around a corner. Every action that the immersive sim philosophy simulates — every interaction it asks the player to commit to physically — is directly enacted in VR rather than abstracted through a cursor.

This is architecturally distinct from porting a cover shooter to VR, where the mechanics of crouching behind geometry and aiming at targets from cover positions can feel awkward at headset scale. The immersive sim’s design was built around environmental interaction and physical presence. VR supplies both.

The game runs on OpenXR, the open standard maintained by the Khronos Group and adopted by Meta, Valve, Microsoft, and every major VR platform since 2019. This is what allows a single build to support Meta Quest 2, 3, and 3S; Valve Index; Pimax; and Pico devices without requiring separate codebases for each platform, as confirmed on Steam. Vive controllers are explicitly excluded from the supported hardware list.

For readers who already play the 2023 remake through a community VR mod — Praydog’s Unreal Engine VR injector (UEVR) with Ashok0’s System Shock-specific plugin — the official port is a different product. The community mod delivers six degrees of freedom and motion controls as a driver-level injection; it requires a PC running SteamVR and cannot run natively on standalone Meta Quest hardware. The official Flat2VR port, with source code access and platform certification from Impact Inked and Atari, can be built and optimized for Quest standalone.

VR’s Market Reality, and Why This Model Is Different

The commercial context for this announcement is not comfortable. In January 2026, 1.77% of Steam users had a connected VR headset, according to Valve’s Steam Hardware and Software Survey. The dedicated VR headset market contracted 14% in 2025 by volume, per IDC tracker data. Meta Quest shipments dropped 42.3% year-on-year in 2025, also per IDC.

In June 2026, Vertigo Games announced the closure of Vertigo Studios Amsterdam — its developer behind Metro Awakening and publisher of Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow. “The VR market remains a challenging space,” CEO Richard Stitselaar said in his closing statement. Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow — a well-reviewed stealth game built on a classic beloved franchise — peaked at 233 concurrent players on Steam.

Flat2VR’s model does not make these numbers go away. A game on PSVR2 and Quest still sells to a small audience. But the conversion-first approach changes who bears the development risk. Original VR games require original IP development, original audience-building, and original marketing — all targeted at a market of roughly two in every hundred Steam users. A conversion begins with an IP that already has an audience, a community that already knows whether it wants to play the game, and a developer whose primary cost is adapting mechanics to the physical interaction layer rather than building a world from scratch.

System Shock has that audience. The 2023 remake accumulated three years of updates and a community that remembers the 1994 original as foundational. A VR version of this game is not a new IP finding its first VR audience — it is an existing fan base deciding whether to play a game they already love in a new way.

    System Shock VR’s Complicated History

This is also not the first time a VR version of System Shock has been announced, or the first time one has been cancelled.

When Nightdive ran its Kickstarter campaign for the remake in 2016, VR support was included as a stretch goal. The campaign did not reach it. The VR plans were shelved, as reported by Heise Online. Years later, Nightdive began developing a VR version of System Shock 2 in partnership with Oculus and Meta. Meta cancelled the project, along with a number of other VR-funded titles. Nightdive CEO Stephen Kick confirmed the cancellation on Bluesky in February 2025. Kick stated on Bluesky: “We were originally developing the VR version for Oculus, but Facebook cancelled a ton of projects, which unfortunately included SS2VR.”

The Flat2VR announcement is different in structural terms: the studio is self-funded and independently operated, not dependent on platform funding from Meta or any other hardware company. If Meta’s priorities shift again, it does not shut down this port.

Platforms, Supported Hardware, and Where to Wishlist

System Shock VR is It is a VR-only, single-player title. English full audio is included, with interface and subtitles available in 12 additional languages

Supported hardware on PC VR includes Meta Quest 2, 3, and 3Sx; and Pico devices. Vive controllers are not supported. Console support covers PlayStation VR2

Wishlists are open on the Steam store page, the PlayStation Store listing, and the Meta Quest store page.

What Flat2VR Announced Alongside System Shock VR

System Shock VR was not the only Flat2VR announcement at the showcase. The studio also revealed High on Life VR, an adaptation of Squanch Games’ 2022 comedy shooter, targeting 2027. High on Life was built on flatscreen from the ground up, but Squanch Games’ earlier work was rooted in VR titles including Accounting+ and Trover Saves the Universe — making the port something of a reversal for the studio, bringing back into VR a developer that had moved away from it.

Flat2VR producer Alastair Burns stated the team has been working on the High on Life port for approximately one year. The studio also announced a broader initiative to bring additional titles to PlayStation VR2 — a “vault” of games including Drop Dead: The Cabin — and unveiled additional funding infrastructure intended to scale its conversion pipeline further.

Whether System Shock VR arrives in 2027, 2028, or later is a question the release date announcement will eventually answer. What the August 2026 showcase confirmed is that the studio doing the work has shipped every game it has announced, has never shipped one in obvious disrepair, and is operated independently of any hardware company’s funding decisions. For a VR market that has seen promising games stall, studios close, and platform money evaporate, those are three things that are genuinely not easy to find in the same announcement.

SHODAN is watching. Wishlists are open.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What platforms will System Shock VR support?

System Shock VR will launch on Meta Quest (2, 3, and 3S), PlayStation VR2, and SteamVR for PC VR headsets including Valve Index, Pimax, and Pico devices. Vive controllers are explicitly excluded from the supported hardware list. A release date has not been announced.

Who is Flat2VR Studios, and what have they shipped before?

Flat2VR Studios was founded in 2024 by members of the Flat2VR modding community — originally a group building unofficial VR ports of flatscreen games. The studio secured $750,000 in seed funding from Andreessen Horowitz’s A16Z Games program and additional backing from Hartmann Capital. It has since shipped Trombone Champ: Unflattened, Roboquest VR, Wrath: Aeon of Ruin VR, and FlatOut 4: Total Insanity VR, and its Half-Life 2 VR work achieved Steam Frame Verified status in August 2026.

Why does the immersive sim genre work especially well in VR?

Immersive sims are built around environmental simulation and player agency: objects are persistent, physics-consistent, and interactable. In VR, every action the genre simulates — reading a code from a body, typing it into a keypad, leaning around a corner to count threats — becomes physically embodied rather than abstracted through a cursor. The design architecture that makes System Shock work on a flat screen is the same architecture that makes it a strong candidate for VR conversion.

Is System Shock VR different from the existing community VR mods?

Yes, in meaningful technical ways. The community UEVR mod (built on Praydog’s Unreal Engine injector, with a System Shock-specific plugin by Ashok0) adds six degrees of freedom and motion controls as a driver-level injection — it runs via SteamVR and requires a PC. It cannot run natively on Meta Quest standalone hardware. The official Flat2VR port, developed with source code access and platform certification, can be built and optimized specifically for standalone Quest as well as PSVR2 and PC VR.
