Shigeru Miyamoto Becomes First Video Game Creator to Receive Japan’s Order of Culture

Tokyo — Shigeru Miyamoto, the 73-year-old architect of Nintendo’s most iconic franchises, is set to receive Japan’s Order of Culture, becoming the first figure from the video game industry to earn the nation’s highest civil decoration.

The Japanese government announced the 2026 laureates on Friday, confirming that Miyamoto will be honored alongside Nobel laureates and traditional artists. The selection signals a definitive institutional recognition of video games as a pillar of Japanese cultural heritage, elevating interactive entertainment to the same tier as literature, science, and classical arts.

    A Milestone for Digital Art

Established in 1937, the Order of Culture is awarded annually to individuals who have made significant contributions to Japanese art, literature, science, or technology. While Japan has long been a global superpower in digital entertainment, the state has historically reserved its highest honors for practitioners of traditional disciplines or hard sciences. Miyamoto’s inclusion marks a paradigm shift in how the cultural establishment defines modern artistic achievement.

“I am truly honored to receive such a prestigious award,” Miyamoto told reporters at Nintendo’s headquarters in Kyoto following the announcement. “I consider this honor as a recognition that I accept on behalf of the many people I have worked with to create these games.”

The award will be presented by the Emperor during a ceremony at the Imperial Palace on November 3, coinciding with Japan’s national Culture Day. Miyamoto joins a distinguished cohort of 2026 recipients, including Kenso Soai, who won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Chemistry; Pritzker Prize-winning architect Toyo Ito; and lighting designer Motoko Ishii. An additional 20 individuals were designated as Persons of Cultural Merit.

    Building a Global Medium

Miyamoto’s career is inextricably linked to the birth and maturation of the modern video game industry. Joining Nintendo in 1977 as an apprentice in the planning department, he quickly revolutionized arcade gaming with the 1981 release of Donkey Kong, which introduced the character that would evolve into Mario.

His subsequent work defined the grammar of interactive entertainment. The 1985 release of Super Mario Bros. is widely credited with rescuing the North American console market from the devastating crash of 1983, establishing the side-scrolling platformer as a dominant genre. A year later, he pioneered non-linear, open-world exploration with The Legend of Zelda, laying the groundwork for modern narrative-driven games.

Over the past four decades, Miyamoto has served as the creative force behind dozens of critically and commercially successful titles, including Pikmin, Animal Crossing, and the Wii hardware concept, which expanded gaming demographics to include families and the elderly. His design philosophy, emphasizing spatial awareness, intuitive controls, and playful discovery, remains the foundational curriculum for game design programs worldwide.

    Soft Power and Institutional Validation

For Japan, the video game industry is a crucial component of its “Cool Japan” soft power strategy and a massive economic driver. The medium has long enjoyed immense popularity domestically, with arcades and console gaming deeply embedded in the social fabric. However, the path to institutional validation has been gradual.

In 2010, Miyamoto received a BAFTA Fellowship, and in 2012, he was awarded Spain’s Prince of Asturias Prize for Communications and Humanities. Yet, domestic recognition from the Japanese state carried a different weight, particularly for an older generation of policymakers who previously viewed gaming as mere children’s amusement. By placing Miyamoto alongside architects and chemists, the government acknowledges the medium’s profound influence on global storytelling, technological innovation, and contemporary aesthetics.

    Legacy and Future Horizons

Though he stepped back from day-to-day development oversight in recent years, Miyamoto remains a Representative Director Fellow at Nintendo, serving as a creative mentor and the public face of the company’s legacy projects, including the Super Mario theme park attractions and animated films.

As the gaming industry grapples with the integration of artificial intelligence, shifting monetization models, and the preservation of digital history, Miyamoto’s elevation to the Order of Culture provides a vital anchor. It affirms that the interactive worlds built by programmers and artists over the last half-century are not transient commercial products, but enduring cultural artifacts worthy of state preservation and historical reverence. When the Emperor pins the medal on November 3, it will not merely be a reward for one man’s imagination, but a formal embrace of the digital age by Japan’s oldest traditions.

Alongside Miyamoto, the 2026 cohort of the Order of Culture reflects a broad cross-section of Japanese intellectual and artistic life. Biologist Tsuneyoshi Kuroiwa and biochemist Shigekazu Nagata are recognized for their foundational research in cellular biology, while French literature scholar Tetsuya Shiokawa and composer Shunichi Tokura represent the enduring strength of the humanities and classical arts in Japan. The simultaneous elevation of these figures alongside a game designer illustrates a deliberate effort by the cultural ministry to bridge the gap between Japan’s historical disciplines and its contemporary global exports.
