A Sega PlayStation exclusive from the PS3 era is now available on the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 for just $5. The game in question is not natively available on the newer Nintendo console, but it is playable on the Nintendo Switch 2 thanks to its backward compatibility with its predecessor console. And considering the Sega game in question is almost 20 years old, it doesn’t really matter which Nintendo console you play it on.

Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 users, more precisely, can grab Sega’s tactical role-playing game,Valkyria Chronicles — one of the most underrated tactical RPGs of all time — for just $4.99 on the Nintendo eShop, down from $20. This is at least the case until September 1. In particular, those who won’t be able to afford the upcoming Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave next month may particularly want to check this one out because it is going to scratch a similar itch.
2008 PS3 Exclusive Game
For those unfamiliar with Valkyria Chronicles, it released in 2008 to an 86 on Metacritic, and it was arguably the best strategy game of its year, and one of the standout RPGs as well. Despite all of this, it didn’t sell very well. It sold well enough to establish a series, but this series was more on the niche side and has gone dormant. Before this, two sequels, Valkyria Chronicles II and Valkyria Chronicles III, were released in 2010 and 2011, respectively. Then came Valkyria Chronicles in 2018. And that was it for the series, minus a spin-off, Valkyria Revolution, in 2017. The whole series is good, minus the spin-off, which was blasted by critics and consumers alike. That said, the first game is undeniably the best, and it is a standalone experience. And it holds up very well. It holds up shockingly well, in fact, more so than the vast majority of PS3 games from 2008.
Now, the game didn’t stay a PS3 exclusive forever. Six years after its launch, it came to PC. Then it was remastered for PS4 in 2016. And then it came to Nintendo Switch in 2018. The Switch version is not the PS4 remaster, though, but the original.
As for the game itself, it is a fictional take on World War 2. In it, you play as Lieutenant Welkin Gunter and the vaunted Squad 7, a ragtag team born out of a desperate militia taking on insurmountable forces of the Empire.
$5 is incredible value for a game of not only high quality, but with a very healthy amount of content. To this end, the Sega game takes 30 hours just to mainline. Almost 40 hours if you add side content. And then completionists will need more like 60 hours with the tactical RPG.
