Roblox’s stock has fallen sharply by 70% after the company revealed its financial performance for the second quarter did not meet expectations, with monetization falling 2% short of company forecasts and consequently affecting total bookings.

This significant drop in share value was driven by lower than anticipated average bookings per daily active user among those under 13, which can be attributed to an emphasis on maintaining long-term user engagement rather than immediate monetization.

During an earnings call, chief financial officer Naveen Chopra explained, “The unexpected monetization decline resulted from a higher than anticipated shift in engagement from high-revenue vintage games from 2025 to new offerings and evergreen experiences that yield lower hourly revenue.”

Chopra highlighted that modifications in the recommendation algorithm, designed to enhance long-term retention, have prioritized games that retain users effectively but provide less immediate revenue. This algorithm change particularly impacted bookings among younger users more than anticipated in the second quarter.

Roblox is aiming to “offset the monetization challenges” by refining its algorithms to deliver better age-targeted recommendations. However, Chopra cautioned that “monetization issues are likely to persist.”

The company anticipates third-quarter bookings to range between $1.58 billion and $1.65 billion, which implies a decline of 14% to 18% compared to the previous year.

Additionally, the company is investing in AI-driven tools, such as the newly introduced Build platform, promising increased infrastructure costs.

For the fourth quarter, Roblox listed a wide range of variables and ongoing platform updates, declining to provide updated full-year guidance. Despite the shifting expectations for the year’s remainder, Chopra stated, “We believe we are making strategic decisions that reinforce our position as an industry leader. Our investments in AI, diversifying content, prioritizing long-term engagement, and enhancing safety, although causing short-term challenges, are aimed at increasing our global gaming market share.”
