Aspyr recently explained to Nintendo Everything why the new Switch 2 version of Rise of the Tomb Raider doesn’t run at 60 frames per second
When playing the game on Nintendo’s console, the action is locked to 30 FPS. Some were hoping that it’d be higher – if not 60 FPS, perhaps a middle ground at 40 FPS
To be fair, the game was largely 30 FPS on most platforms. But the PC version had an unlocked frame rate while it could go as high as 60 on the PS4 Pro
We delved into the situation with producer manager Anna Grant and senior game producer Kay Gilmore. It turns out that the team did explore the possibility of exploring 60 FPS, but doing so would have resulted in “serious compromises that would have frustrated players.”
We were told the following:
“Yes, we spent months trying to get the game to run consistently at 60 FPS. We heard players’ feedback on the Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition release regarding the sacrifice of visual fidelity in favor of better performance, so we wanted to make sure Rise of the Tomb Raider was the best version of the game we could possibly get on Switch 2. Despite its age, Rise of Tomb Raider is a much more GPU heavy game than its predecessor. As a result it couldn’t run at 60fps without serious compromises that would have frustrated players.”
Aside from the above, we were also informed that the team looked into unlocking the frame rate. However, “it became that the performance wouldn’t have been consistent enough to make players happy.” The option would have resulted in “stuttering and other frustrating experiences during busy action sequences that would ruin the immersion.” As a result, the idea was unfortunately scrapped
