Sony PlayStation’s decision to terminate new PS5 disc production in early 2028 could further boost digital game sales. It’s also raised concerns among physical media supporters about ownership rights. A successful lawsuit against Microsoft may give these critics hope that courts will protect consumers

    Xbox security headaches

Earlier in 2026, Brazilian Redditor Ordo_Liberal began detailing his saga. The difficulties started after Microsoft blocked his Xbox account, preventing him from enjoying a large library. Support agents claimed the account was hacked even with two-factor authentication active

Despite the gamer’s persistence, Microsoft was unwilling to restore access as it investigated. He was also unable to use any recovery options to unlock his content. Frustratingly, the company suggested that Ordo_Liberal rebuy all of the digital games

The Reddit poster resolved to file a lawsuit after consulting with a local attorney. On June 10th, he shared that a court ruled in his favor, ordering Microsoft to unfreeze the Xbox account. The plaintiff also received around $400 in “moral damages”. Failure to comply within 15 days would result in additional penalties

    Brazilian gamers have more rights

Unfortunately, it may be challenging for other individuals in similar situations to secure a victory. Brazil is consumer-friendly, including laws that target abuse from digital marketplaces. Ordo_Liberal hired a lawyer for free and incurred no legal fees, which is a rare perk in many nations

Microsoft devotes considerable rethat it had the right to disable the compromised Xbox account, it assigned 12 attorneys to fight the lawsuit. Gamers in other countries may find such opposition too formidable to take on

Given Sony’s shift away from physical games, buyers are worrying more about losing access to their digital purchases. Ordo_Liberal prevailed, but a blocked PlayStation account could prove extremely costly

According to GamingBolt, Brazilian politician Erika Hilton has already taken an interest in the development. The lawmaker is particularly troubled that higher-priced PS5 consoles with disc drives will become less useful
