Netflix has tapped an R&B legend to perform the theme song for theA Different Worldsequel series. The streamer announced that R&B songstress Brandi Norwood will perform the theme song for the series, which premieres on September 24th. Netflix teased the announcement of Brandi’s involvement on Monday.

The sequel series’ theme song is a derivative of the Patti LaBelle song that became synonymous with the series after its premiere in season two and became a staple through season 5. Boys II Men then did a New Jack Swing-inspired version of the theme song alongside Terrence Forsythe for season six, which was the final season of the show.
Netflix first revealed in May that the sequel series would arrive in Fall 2026, later locking in a September release date. The showcenters on Deborah Wayne, the youngest daughter of Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert-Wayne, as she starts her own chapter at Hillman College.
Kadeem Hardison and Jasmine Guy are set to return as Dwayne and Whitley, reprising the roles that made them household names. Felicia Pride is writing and executive producing the series, which began filming in June 2025 ahead of Netflix’s official series order later that year.
Netflix confirmed in December that additional original cast members would be back as well, including Cree Summer and Darryl M. Bell, with rapper-turned-actor Method Man stepping into a new role. The returning actors expressed excitement about carrying forward the legacy of a show widely regarded as one of the most influential portrayals of HBCU life on television.
A Different World aired on NBC from 1987 to 1993 and became a defining piece of HBCU culture on screen, growing out of its origins as a Cosby Show spinoff into a groundbreaking series that celebrated Black college life under Debbie Allen’s creative direction.
