TL;DR: PlayStation fans plan an August 23-30 seven-day PS5 blackout to protest Sony ending physical disc production, aiming to reduce active users. Organizers cite studio closures, price hikes, and a perceived betrayal of disc ownership; a “Don’t Kill the Disc” petition has 345,286 verified signatures.

PlayStation’s most diehard fans are calling for a 7-day blackout of their PS5s in an effort to protest Sony’s decision to end physical disc production of PlayStation games. Sony’s decision to end physical copies of PlayStation games has sparked fury among gamers, with many critics citing it as a decision to drive profits higher and remove ownership from gamers.

The protest, organizedgust 23 to 30, which is an attempt at directly targeting one of Sony’s key metrics: active users. Organizers argue that Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has grown increasingly disconnected from its fanbase, citing the closure of studios like Bluepoint and Japan Studio, along with price hikes for hardware and services such as PSN

This backlash isn’t alone, as a Change.org petition titled “Don’t Kill the Disc” has already reached 345,286 verified signatures, indicating there is substantial pushback from the gaming community against the phase-out of discs. Fans claim that Sony’s shift toward digital is not only financially driven but a betrayal of the physical gaming culture that helped define PlayStation’s identity, with the Change.org petition highlighting E3 2013, where Sony attracted a generation of PlayStation gamers with an advertisement that mocked competitors locking games to their initial buyers, removing the ability to trade it in, sell it, or lend it to a friend.

Sony’s advertisement stated, “keep it forever,” which now doesn’t seem to be the case at all, as purchasing a digital copy of the game only purchases a license to access that game, which Sony has the ability to revoke, versus physical ownership where a buyer has a copy of the actual game files and, depending on the game, has the ability to play offline if Sony decides to stop hosting the title.

What are PlayStation fans planning to do during the proposed August 23–30 blackout?

Which Sony metric are protest organizers aiming to impact with the 7-day PS5 blackout?

Which studio closures do protesters cite as evidence SIE is disconnected from its fanbase?

Why do fans argue that digital-only purchases reduce true ownership compared to physical discs?

While analysts doubt the decision will reverse Sony’s decision to end physical media, especially considering the recent reports stating there were only seven PlayStation games that sold more than 100,000 copies in the US throughout 2026. Regardless, the protest highlights a growing divide between SIE and its core audience, and we will have to wait and see if the protest makes a tangible difference.
