PlayStation is still feeling the effects of its all-digital backlash, after fans were hoping the company would do a u-turn after seeing the outcry.

Instead, Sony CFO Lin Tao said at a recent earnings call that the company had “cautiously considered” this, and has chosen to “cautiously move this forward.”

That caution hasn’t exactly helped as gamers are still livid. Many are even calling for a mass ‘blackout’ and many more are threatening to jump to Xbox and PC as better alternatives.

As a final nail in the coffin however is a new warning that comes with PlayStation 5 consoles. Reddit user Epsilon123 spotted one of these fresh warning labels and posted it online, saying “PS5 consoles are now starting to arrive in stores with this message in the box.”

The warning reads as follows: “IMPORTANT NOTICE: From January 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on the PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only. Discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on this console.”

Not only does this reaffirm the belief that PlayStation 6 will be an all-digital console, as rahga pointed out in the comments it also allows PlayStation to “refute claims from consumers that they were deliberately misled into believing that Sony would continue supporting discs.”

Needless to say the warning has stirred up more outrage from PlayStation users, and many are longing for a reckoning of some kind.

“I truly hate this timeline we are in. Sony needs to be humbled” read a comment by bloodyeye98.

Another read “Play Has about 30 Limits,” mocking the PlayStation motto that’s become less and less true over the years.

“I’ve bought every PS to date I can confidently say that this was my last” added Logik_in_theory.

Is GTA 6’s launch a make or break point for PlayStation?

Some even want to use the launch of Grand Theft Auto VIas a way of sticking it to Sony. AReverieofEnvisage suggested “if you guys really wanna boycott and protest, then maybe, don’t buy GTA6. Cancel your preorder if you did. It’s digital only right?

“So, do it. GTA6 is going to be a topseller. There will be no physical discs. So this is the perfect game to show that you are against Sony’s plan.”

It feels like wishful thinking as while people are absolutely livid at PlayStation/Sony killing off discs, they also reallywant to play GTA VI; especially on PlayStation where it apparently ‘plays best’.

It’s a tough decision, but Rockstar Games has received an equal amount of flack after it confirmed physical copies of the game will supply a download code in the box.

The new warning found in PlayStation 5 boxes has essentially sealed the deal. Appealing to the company’s good nature has gotten users nowhere, so now if they really want to force change they’ll have to vote with their wallets rather than their words.

That likely won’t be too difficult considering the ‘RAMpocalypse’ is going to make PlayStation’s next console its most-expensive by far. If you start saving up now you might just be able to afford one.
