PeriVision’s VR eye test matches the gold standard across glaucoma severity

A new study conducted at Bern’s University Hospital shows that VisionOne, the virtual reality eye-testing platform developed by Vaud-based PeriVision, delivers clinical performance comparable to the stationary perimeter considered the gold standard, including in advanced glaucoma.

PeriVision, a spin-off of the University of Bern, has reported new findings from a study of VisionOne, its platform using virtual reality glasses to measure the impact of glaucoma on visual fields, information that is crucial for the prevention and treatment of the disease.

Conducted at University Hospital Bern (Inselspital), the study shows that VisionOne delivers clinical performance comparable to the Octopus 900, a stationary perimeter considered the gold standard, across the full spectrum of glaucoma severity. It evaluated 73 patients, representing 120 eyes, with mild, moderate and severe glaucoma, each completing both examinations during the same visit. Among its findings, the study showed a high level of agreement between the two methods, including in advanced cases. The full study is available in the journal Ophthalmology Science.

The result addresses one of the main reservations about virtual reality perimetry, namely its ability to assess patients with advanced glaucoma accurately.

According to the company, since the release of VisionOne VFT earlier this year, the certified product version incorporating the adaptive stimulus modulation method validated in the study, PeriVision has gained commercial traction across the European Union, the United Kingdom and the United States, where it holds the relevant regulatory certifications.
